Our school values the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge (VPRC) and our library staff, in conjunction with the Year 7 English teachers, are proud of the many students who successfully completed the challenge this year. The library team have spent many months promoting reading with book talks and VPRC sessions to ensure students are best placed to successfully complete the VPRC.
Congratulations to the students who completed the 2023 challenge, and we look forward to celebrating with them at a pizza lunch next term.
The theme for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week this year was Read, Grow, Inspire and we saw many students keen to participate in our competitions and activities. Students enjoyed the daily Book Week quizzes and activities run at lunchtime. They were eager to battle it out for the winner of the popular Kahoot on YA novels and keen to participate in the bookmark making activity.
Thursday lunchtime was a hive of activity with
enthusiastic students excited to be part of our CBCA Book Week Treasure Hunt. To conclude our Book Week celebrations, we had a special music performance featuring our talented VCE music students. Our thanks go to Ms. Turok and Ms. De Matteis for supporting the music students to perform in the library.
In early September, as part of our Excellence and High Abilities Program, the library team organised popular YA author, James Phelan, to present to all Year 8 students. James is an Australian writer of thrillers and young adult novels, and his most popular books in our library are The Last 13 series and the Alone series. In the afternoon session, James ran a writers’ workshop with almost fifty Year 8 students who expressed an interest in creative writing. It was a fabulous opportunity for students to meet a successful author and to hear about his life, career, and writing tips.
As a librarian there is nothing more satisfying than turning a reluctant reader into an avid one. If you are having trouble getting your young person to read, then please encourage them to visit the library and to reach out to a library team member. As J.K. Rowling says, ‘If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book’. The library team are eager to find that right book for all our students whether they are regular readers or reluctant ones.
We hope you enjoy the photos taken throughout our Book Week celebrations and author visit.
