Crime and Punishment

Year 10

Crime and Punishment Excursion to the Old Melbourne Gaol

In August both Year 10 Crime and Punishment Semester 2 classes attended an excursion to the legal precinct at the Old Melbourne Gaol.

Please see below for a report of the day from two students:

We greatly enjoyed our time at the Old Magistrates Court, it was very fun to see everyone try their best at re-enacting the mock court trial of Kim Tran, where he was convicted of culpable driving. Our tour guide was very eccentric and entertaining, he didn’t make anything boring and pushed us to have a great time. Everyone did a really good job acting, most people got into their character, allowing it to be engaging for everyone. Afterwards we had a bit of time to ourselves at Melbourne Central, my friends and I ate lunch and did various activities around the shopping centre. After around an hour we made our way to the Old Melbourne Gaol, where we had a personal tour of the place and learned tons of interesting and gorey facts about the mistreatment of prisoners and how it psychologically affected them. One story that caught my eye was when one prisoner escaped by walking out the front door by wearing a disguise when everyone was distracted by Ned Kelly’s trial. After our tour we had time to roam around the gaol, while we did not encounter any ‘ghosts’, it was fun to go inside the cells and imagine how it used to be.”
