Principal's Report
Dear Families,
It has been a busy two weeks at the college with many extracurricular activities held to enhance our teaching and learning programs. The primary school students participated in swimming lessons at Sweeney Swim Centre with the warm water a welcome relief on the cool days we have been experiencing. The Year 8 students braved the cold at Kryal Castle where they were immersed in medieval times. They explored the intriguing world of medieval madness through hands-on activities facilitated by highly trained knights, nobles and humble peasants. Our students delving into medieval history, customs, battle strategies and weapons.
Meanwhile our seniors attended a screening of The Hate Race and Charlie’s Country which are post-colonial texts that highlight issues around social justice, cultural identity, respect, and the scourge of racism. At the event the students considered points of comparison and difference and learnt about the language and techniques used to convey ideas in both the film and text.
A small group of Year 11s undertook a visit to Melbourne Zoo to enhance their science program whilst our Year 9s completed the Morrisby questionnaire to examine career pathways.
Students studying VCE Unit 1/2 Health & Human Development are fortunate to experience parenting with our simulation babies (yes, we now have TWO) in the coming week. Students will be parenting their baby for approximately 3 days. In the event the student has important learning tasks (SACs, practice SACs etc.) when they have the baby, it is their responsibility to seek care for the baby if required, just like any parent does. There might be some slight interruptions as the baby will require care at different times for different things (e.g., feeding, a nappy change, burping etc.), but this is key learning for the students in meeting their needs. As students become more confident with the baby, it will become easier for them to know what the baby requires. Feel free to get involved if see one of our seniors heading home with their “child” for the evening.
We are delighted to welcome Nicholas Halls to the staff who joins us from Sunbury college. Nicholas is teaching English and Humanities.
This year we have reviewed our School Wide Positive Behaviour System which reflects our three values: Respect, Innovation, and Integrity. Our students have been given a voice in the review process which has been vital in ensuring it is child friendly and reflects our expectations. We will be launching the new matrix in the coming week.
I would like to remind our parents of our P-6 students. There is to be no purchasing of any items from the canteen for friends to share, we have several students with very serious dietary requirements, we thank you for your support with this.
I look forward to another busy fortnight ahead with events such as the Life Ed Van in the primary school and excursions to the Holocaust Museum, Year 12 recharge day, Kendo incursions and a range of sporting events in the secondary years.
Keep warm and dry this weekend and I am sure many of us will be glued to the TV on Saturday night watching the Matildas take on Sweden for third place in the FIFA World Cup. What a wonderful match it was Wednesday night with a disappointing outcome.
