Book Week
This year Book Week’s theme was Read, Grow, Inspire and it gave staff and students a wonderful opportunity to celebrate books, ideas, creativity and inspiration.
Dress Up Day was a hit, with many students choosing to get involved and show off their costumes at the parade. Congratulations to 7C3 who won best dressed class by working together to recreate the book, Assassination Classroom by Yusei Matsui.
Year 10s and 11s attended a session with Tyson Yunkaporta, who spoke about disinformation and misinformation; arguing that it is the biggest challenge of our time. Students were encouraged to think about a range of challenging ideas and how they engage critically with the information they encounter.
Students said they valued ‘hearing from a new perspective’ and described the talk as interesting, confusing and genuine. One student noted that ‘It was very funny and informative, and whilst it was nothing like what I had anticipated, I think it was extremely relevant and has sparked some very important discussions.’
A number of students also signed up for one of the interesting book and author workshops with Jess Walton, Ailsa Wild and Bianca Oder. Others took the opportunity to have a personal poem created for them by ‘Charlotte’ (aka author and performance artist Ailsa Wild) or to attend the Book Tasting. We also enjoyed a full house at the poetry recital and were impressed with the courage of the speakers and selection of poems (and musical numbers).
Finally, a massive thanks to everyone who contributed to our Book Week Fundraiser. We made $675 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, which is fantastic! (And if you missed out but would still like to contribute, please do: https://edu.greatbookswap.org.au/unihighsbookweekfundraiser).
