Debating Club Term 3

At the start of the term, Debating Coordinator, Tom Varns, headed off to Mirboo North Secondary College. The Debating Club would like to extend their gratitude for his dedication to all things debating and the support he has given the club over the previous years.

On Monday 7th August, students participated in the fifth and final round of the Debating Association of Victoria’s (DAV) competition. On Monday, students stayed back after school for a coaching session from a member of the Melbourne University Debating Society (MUDS) and then headed off to Haileybury to battle it out against other schools. UHS had 4 teams competing across the A grade and D grade competition categories. Those competing in A grade faced the additional challenge of debating a secret topic only revealed on the night. The D grade participants debated the topic: ‘That we regret the use of participation awards’. The students faced stiff competition and came out with two wins, the highlight of which was one of junior teams achieving their first win for the year.

With the formal DAV competitions coming to an end, the Debating Club throughout Term Three have continued to have lively debates during their lunchtime meetings on various topics including should Australia stop using pesticides, should technology be banned from government schools etc. The club actively encourages new members, so curious minds are invited to attend Thursdays at lunchtime in room 320.
