Canoe Polo Competition

In July, I joined the Victorian Youth Polo Academy (or VYPA) team at the 2023 Junior International Canoe Polo Championships in Belfast, UK.

What is Canoe Polo?

Canoe polo combines boating and ball-handling skills with a contact team game. Each team has five players on the pitch, in individual kayaks, and the aim is to score as many goals as you can in the opposition's net which is suspended two-metres above the water.

How it went:

Five of the eight in the team were representing Australia in the under 21 men’s category. The other three (including me) were selected to join the Denmark under 16 team, as there weren’t enough players from Australia to form a whole team in that category. The Denmark team won 2 games during the tournament and learnt a lot about working together in a very short amount of time. It was a fantastic learning experience for all the team members getting to experience the sport at an international level for the first time, and to be the first Australian team competing for many years.

If you would like to learn more about canoe polo or get involved  you can go to vypa.org. They will be running beginner camps over the summer holidays.
