M3 Cubed Maths Program

On Wednesday, five Year 6 students represented Good Shepherd at the  M3 - Magnificent Marvellous Minds conference at St Columba's College in Essendon. It was a day of rigorous learning and social engagement. Students worked alongside like minded students thinking critically and creatively to solve problems.  Good Shepherd was beautifully represented with students displaying attention to detail, determination and teamwork.

Shemaya Navaratne, Dylan Tran and Leah Chin chose to participate two workshops called ‘Tournament of Minds’ and ‘Fashion in a Box'. Initially they were a little nervous, but enthusiastic to explore, socialise and work with many other like minded peers.

Anthony Phung and Isaiah Png created a seat out of cardboard and also participated in the Tournament of Minds. They were particularly interested in the E in STEM - engineering.  They worked as a team to blueprint and design with a group of other gifted and talented students.

My favourite thing in the M cubed conference was when we (tried) to engineer a cardboard seat. I learnt that you can think in 2 different ways- creative (when you think outside the box) or critical (when you think like normal).

Being able to be part of this astonishing experience has been a very special part of my primary school journey, but the best part about it was being able to connect with ‘like-minded’ peers.

I have enjoyed the conference, which was to ‘grow your gift, learn your gift and gift your gift’. The Tournament of Minds was definitely my favourite. This activity broadened my mindset and I would love for Good Shepherd to participate in a Tournament of Minds in the future.

I really enjoyed doing this, it felt really good working with like-minded people and receiving different challenges. I feel extremely privileged to have received this opportunity.

Leah Chin

I liked it when we made a chair out of cardboard in the E in STEM because we had to think logically and think how stable, how long and how much area do we need. I also liked Tournament Of Minds (TOM) where we did critical and creative thinking.
