Physics of Optics, Acoustics, and Warmth

Students have been discovering the magic of physics through a series of activities that help us better understand light, sound and heat. We have darkened the room and observed colour through light and dark, as well as seeing ultraviolet light show things we cannot normally see… like the snot on our jumpers, "Ewww…" Hahaha!

We will be completing some challenges with warm water and ice this week to learn about how our body perceives these changes in temperature. We have also learnt about how sound travels and the way we understand the sounds around us. Below are some thoughts from the children and images of their work and them playing with ice.

Daisy says “It’s very interesting and I like that when Eddie covered the room into darkness we got to be in the dark, including our games of murder in the dark.”.

Rosalie says “It was very fun when Eddie blocked out the windows, I found it interesting that moving light with mirrors was difficult. Also the ice was cold”.

Siofra says “It was really cool when you tapped the glass jars and we heard different frequencies. I found the ice-melt challenge to be lots of fun, but a good challenge and difficult too.”.

Wolfie says “I really loved the ice-melt challenge lesson as it was really fun to see what methods work quickly and which took much longer”.

Lexi says “I really liked the ice-melt challenge because we got to try out different strategies of melting ice to see whose strategy was the fastest to do so. And we also got to eat ice!”.
