Year 1/2–Celebrating Learning

What we have been up to:

What a very busy few weeks of events we have had! Thank you to our school community for getting involved and supporting our NAIDOC day celebration, Wear It Purple day and Book Week!

Over the past few weeks, we have been enjoying students’ various presentations about the favourite celebration of their special person or elder! We have seen videos, animations, podcasts and posters to name a few presentation choices. These presentations have increased students’ speaking and listening skills and have helped students learn about giving their peers constructive feedback.

As we approach the last few weeks of Term 3, the year 1/2 students continue preparing for our community celebration afternoon and the pizza/movie night coming up in week 9. Keep an eye out for the personal invitation!

Maths:

In this second half of Term 3, we will continue to develop our understanding of the connection between multiplication and division. Similarly, to addition and subtraction, there are multiplication and division facts that are related. We have been using number stories to connect multiplication and division facts to arrays or pictures.

Students in year 1 and 2 will be given a series of maths sessions to help them plan for the pizza/ movie night coming up in week 9. Students will work together to collect data about pizza preferences of their peers to inform our pizza order for the evening.

English:

Students are now moving into the Little Learners Love Literacy Stage 7.4 sounds in phonics. These sounds include: o-e as in noseo as in nooe and in toe and ow as in low.

Students are enjoying exploring poetry, and writing poems about themselves in different styles. During book week, Steph Amir, a parent of one of our year 1 students, came in to show our students the book of poetry that she has recently had published. Steph also read some of her favourite childhood poems to the students and helped them to write their own acrostic poems. It was a beautiful and engaging experience for all students- thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us, Steph!

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

Students will continue presenting their celebration interviews and learning about the similarities and differences between celebrations around the world.

Thank you to the adults of year 1/2s who have already viewed and given consent and payment for the “Year 1/2 Mainstream TPS dinner and movie night” on compass. Prior to the evening event, we are inviting parents to come to our classrooms in the last hour of school for our special T3 celebration that is currently being organised by the students. Look out for the Compass post and we hope to see you there.

In maths, we will continue exploring measurement, looking at volume, capacity and mass. We will be revisiting place value towards the end of term to strengthen our students' understanding of numbers.
