1/2DS Classroom News

Term 3 has been a busy one! Along with swimming, concert preparations and celebrating Book Week, we have, of course, also been busy learning in the classroom!

Maths

We have been learning about fractions of shapes and collections. We are learning that fractions are about equal parts of wholes. When we write a fraction for one half, the top number, which is called the numerator, tells how many parts we are using. The bottom number, called the denominator, tells how many parts are in the whole shape or collection.

We have been cutting shapes to show halves and quarters. We have also been using collections of counters to show halves and quarters.

Religion

We have been learning about Creation and thinking about the ways we can take care of this special gift to us from God. To start us thinking, we read a story about the homes of two frogs called Lester and Clyde.

Here are some photos that show us recreating the clean and dirty ponds that the frogs lived in.

Inquiry

We have been learning that sound causes objects to vibrate. To investigate this, we covered a small bowl tightly with cling wrap, then sprinkled some salt crystals on top. Next we hummed loudly next to the bowl to see if the sound would make the salt jump it did! We tried the same experiment placing the bowl and salt close to the speakers on a CD player - and then we could really see the sound making vibrations that caused the salt to jump! We tried the same experiment using sprinkles, pencil shavings and tissue paper.

We had lots of fun!
