Year 3/4S Class News

A hive of excitement, a buzz in the air, it appears spring is here. To get through the dreary, wet and cold winter months, Year 3/4S were busy with a diverse range of learning. On sunny winter days we took our learning outside to soak up the sun, writing about our holidays or reading a favourite book.

On colder days we rugged up and stayed inside, learning about the gift of Eternal Life through Jesus, and imagined we were travelling off to a neighbouring country when writing sizzling starts for our Information Reports. We can’t wait to share them with you at Learning Journeys.

Forced to change plans due to predicted rain, thunderstorms and even hail, the Year 3/4 Science excursion to Hallett Cove was cancelled. In its place was the Royal Adelaide ‘show me what you know about Science day’. With 18 experiments and investigations attempted in all the different areas of Science, the students participated in a wide variety of hands-on tasks from sliding rocks, disappearing colours, secret writing, erosion stations and watched the effects of elephant toothpaste, a sugar snake, travelling water and colour change flowers, to name a few.

Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary are some of the common terms we have learnt in Science this term. Mr Harris has brought an incredible enthusiasm and passion for this topic to the class and I think we might have some budding geologists in the future. We have looked at old maps and determined where erosion has occurred. We’ve examined and drawn rock and soil samples and we are currently waiting for our backyard soil samples to settle so we can look at and compare them with other people's samples.

Some of the highlights from the students included Book Week, Science Day, Contraction Surgery with Surgeons Spencer and Harris, using Teachable Machine to classify angles in Year 4 maths.

The highlight for me from something in Term 3 is when Book Week casual day and I dressed up as Owen Grady. The book I was from was Jurassic World Dominion. My friend Cadence was dressed up as H-dude and Zac was Moses. Rafiki

My highlights when the Year 4s went on camp at Nunyara with the Year 5s and Science Day where we tested experiments. Hannah

The coin was put into Coca-Cola. It looked really cool when it came out. It was dirty and clean at the same time. Charlotte P

Science Day was excellent but the elephant toothpaste for the best part. John

I enjoyed Book Week when I dressed up as a dinosaur and wore casual clothes. I liked the parade. Book Week was fun.  Elijah

My favourite thing on Science Day was all of it because it was very interesting. It was cool when the tea bag was put on fire and it flew up into the air and came back down when it was finished with the fire. Piper

On Science day the first experiment was the colour changing flowers so we got some dye and put some in water. We picked flowers and then we cut the bottom and put them in. One of them we cut in half and put 2 different colours. 2 days later they changed colours we did the same but with kitchen paper. Charlotte G

Year 4 & 5 Camp

Arriving at Nunyara campsite, the Year 4 and 5 students were greeted with lovely sunshine for the day's activities. A highlight of Day 1 was the water relay, with all students demonstrating excellent teamwork. In the evening Mr Dal Santo's quiz was the best camp quiz ever and team 'Nah Boy' came out victorious.

Day 2 was a bit drizzly but the commentary and competition over at the 'billy carts' warmed us all up. The view from the Tree Climb was phenomenal and almost everyone overcame personal fears to reach the top, supported by their friends and teachers on the belay line.

Throughout the camp students in both year levels spontaneously showed the qualities of encouragement, care, responsibility and increased maturity. We were excited to have some extra visitors on Day 2 in the form of two very large kangaroos.

As a teacher, the most wonderful part of camp was seeing the students interact and encourage each other outside of their friendship groups and year levels. Hopefully, some new friendships have been forged and will be retained.

Some camp highlights and favourite moments from the students:

Aslan's table because we balanced for 1 minute 30. This was Tribe 2 'Crimson Interceptors'.

My favourite thing was the tree climb because you can see the airport.

Playing the piano in Nioka.

I loved the mornings and evenings chatting with my friends.

The city lights twinkled.

I loved everything.

It was a great view.

Year 1 Excursion

The Year 1 students iUnit this term is Observing and Living with the Seasons – an Aboriginal perspective. We enjoyed an excursion to the Adelaide Botanic Garden to follow the Aboriginal Plant Use Trail. We were fortunate to be led by Trent Hill, an Indigenous storyteller, educator and guide. He showed us a variety of plants that can be used for eating and others that assist with making fire, nets, baskets, traps and medicine. We also enjoyed exploring the Botanic Garden. There were many highlights, some of which you can see in these photos.

Bali Life Stalls

This week on Monday and Tuesday, the Year 6 students did a wonderful job running stalls at recess and lunch as a fundraiser for Bali Life. Bali Life is an organisation in Bali that supports underprivileged children and families, through education, housing and other supports. The money we raise will be going towards the Street Kids and Women’s Centre, which you can see below. They will be moving into this new building next year.

Bali Life stalls also give the Year 6 students an opportunity to create simple financial plans and budgets, understand economics and business, and foster an outward focus and global perspective. Thank you so much to everyone who came and supported these stalls! We made a total of $911. Well done Year 6 students – you worked very hard to serve and support Bali Life. Thank you also to Year 6 families for all the behind-the-scenes work that went on at home!
