Message from the Principal

Week 7&8 Term 4 2025
Dear CNPS Families,
What makes Carlton North Primary School community special is the way we work collectively to uphold the values of our school. I encourage all community members to think about our values or respect, resilience, trust and inclusion throughout all our interactions. This week has seen the final School Council meeting for 2025 take place. On behalf of the entire CNPS community, can I please thank our dedicated councillors (Rebecca Slater – President, Henry Tinsley – Vice President, Clare London – Treasurer, Warwick Mihaly, Briony O’Keeffe, Alison Knott, Charlie Perry, Michelle Barnett, Hazell Opoz, Andrew Schnaider, Jane Bilby, Trish Harrington, Sam Guerra and James Barnard) for volunteering their time and energy in the pursues of driving excellence for the students of Carlton North. Finally, a shout out to all the parent/carer helpers of 2025, please save Monday 8 December 2025 in your calendars for a special ‘thank you’ morning tea at school from 10.30am, we hope you can make it.
Capital Works Project
The capital works project continues to move along. Last week saw the delivery and installation of steel beams to the new hall. As with any building construction, you move through the stages of the project thinking news spaces are too big or too small. It is exciting to see the hall coming together. CNPS is hoping to take possession of the new library before the end of the year. Please keep your eyes posted for updates regarding this important stage of the project.
Class Structures 2026
As I have written in previous editions of the newsletter, CNPS has spent much of 2025 reviewing our programs and beginning our transition to the new Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0. As part of the review and to ensure we can continue to strengthen our early literacy and numeracy teaching and learning, CNPS will be moving to straight year levels from Foundation – Year 2 in 2026. We will continue our multi-age learning approach for our Year 3-6 students.
Staff News
As we advance towards the end of the 2025 academic year, we come to the time when staff indicate that they will not be returning to CNPS in 2026. With that said, I wanted to inform the community that Sam Guerra will be leaving Carlton North Primary School at the end of 2025. Sam joined the school in 2021 and has been a valuable part of the team. Sam’s passion for his students shines through his strong advocacy for their learning and wellbeing. On behalf of the CNPS community we wish Sam and his partner all the very best for the future.
School Planning 2026 (Further Reminder)
A further reminder to the community that CNPS is immersed in planning for 2026. If any families of students in Foundation – Year 5 are planning to exit the school at the end of the year, please contact the office. This important information will support the school in planning for student and teacher placement in 2026.
Foundation – Year 4 Swimming Program
On Monday 24 November 2025 the Swimming in Schools Program commenced for Foundation – Year 4 students. The program is designed to increase opportunities for students to learn how to swim and develop lifelong skills in swimming and water safety to reduce their risk of drowning and injury. CNPS has again employed a crossing supervisor on Canning Street between 9am – 12pm on the days the swimming program is running. Thank you to the parents/carers who have volunteered thus far during the swimming program. Without your support the swimming program would be challenging to operate.
Reminder TeamKids Summer Vacation Care 2026
On Wednesday (29 October 2025), I met with Alex Guthrie of TeamKids partnerships to discuss the summer vacation program. I advised Alex that CNPS has been informed that during the January school holidays external ground works will be occurring across the school. TeamKids with CNPS have decided in the interest of student safety to again not operate a vacation program at Carlton North Primary School. CNPS and TeamKids apologise for any inconvenience. If you have any questions, please contact TeamKids or the CNPS office.
CNPS families will be able to access TeamKids summer vacation programs at the following locations:
Princes Hill Primary School
Brunswick South Primary School
Clifton Hill Primary School
Flemington Primary School
Jordan from TeamKids at CNPS will be stationed at Brunswick South Primary School across the summer.

On-Street Parking
There have continued to be complaints about vehicles parking illegally on Lee Street and O’Grady Street during peak times. Parents/carers are encouraged to park their vehicles legally, observing council regulations. CNPS does not enforce parking restrictions around the school, however, we do continue to engage with council regarding improvements to pedestrian safety.
Hats/Sunscreen
As we are now into Term 4 and the sun is beginning to shine, it is important that students have a hat to wear during recess and lunch. If you would like to purchase a hat, please contact the office. We also ask that families ensure students apply sunscreen at home before attending school. We do have some sunscreen supplies at school should students need to reapply during the day.
School – Home Partnership
The hallmark of a strong school-home partnership is open and respectful dialogue, that embodies the school values. Please feel free to reach out to Jane, Erin, Trish or I should you have any questions or queries.
Warm Regards
Matthew Ferguson
Principal
