Upcoming Learning

Literacy

We have been busily exploring our mentor text, Tiddler, and looking at the ways modal words are used to be persuasive. Students have enjoyed learning vocabulary words like register (also known as the roll), tiddler (meaning little fish, storyteller), dawdle (move slowly) and haul (to pull or carry with great effort). In the coming weeks, we will be reviewing learning and taking the opportunity to do some writing for enjoyment!

Maths

In Number, we will continue exploring fractions. Students have been breaking collections into halves, quarters and eighths by drawing them as arrays and then cutting in half, half again to see quarters and half again to find eighths of collections. They will also explore finding halves, quarters and eighths of shapes.

In our Shape unit, students have enjoyed learning about two dimensional shapes and the way we can sort and manipulate them. They will now be exploring three dimensional shapes, building their understanding of edges, vertices and faces and will explore the 2D shapes they can see in 3D objects. Students will then participate in a variety of shape themed rotations over a few sessions to celebrate the end of an interesting unit!

Check out this song about 3D shapes...we promise it IS as annoying as it may initially sound BUT it gets stuck in your head and that's what we want for our students!

Inquiry

This term, students are exploring how people, places, and stories are connected across time in our Inquiry unit Through Generations. They will interview someone from an older generation to learn about the past and practise using language to describe events in the past, present, and future. Students will also explore different points of view, the importance of special places in communities and cultures, and how stories from the past can be told in different ways.

Wellbeing

In Wellbeing, students will explore the topic of Positive Gender Relations. Students will participate in the following lessons (we have fallen behind so will be completing some of these and potentially getting to Lesson 5 and 6)

  1. What is violence? What is gender-based violence?
  2.  The opposite of violence is respect
  3.  What does it mean to ask, give or refuse consent
  4.  Respect my body, respect my personal space
  5. Some Secrets Should Not Be Kept
  6. No, Go, Tell - how to get help if someone abuses you

If you'd like to know more about the lesson and what is involved, you can find it in the link below by scrolling to page 3 of the Contents and then selecting Topic 8.

Celebration of Learning

After exploring the text The Gentle Genius of Trees, students used the information from the book to write informative paragraphs that included clear topic sentences, relevant supporting details, and thoughtful concluding statements. As part of their learning, students also created labelled diagrams to visually represent the growth process of trees, helping to reinforce and communicate their understanding. We were impressed by the way they combined factual information with strong writing and visual features to share their knowledge.
