Lauren’s Aerial Acrobatics Success

Lauren Batchelder, Year 11

Lauren’s journey into the world of circus arts has been nothing short of inspiring. After spending around ten years as a competitive gymnast, she was forced to step away from the sport due to injury. But as one door closed, another soon opened. A trial aerial class sparked a fresh passion, and Lauren quickly found herself embracing a whole new discipline.

Lauren began her aerial acrobatics training at the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) as well as partly on her own, combining expert guidance with independent exploration. Remarkably, she entered her first aerial competition after only three months of training.

After taking a short break from competing, Lauren returned to the scene in May this year.

One of the standout aspects of Lauren’s performance journey is her artistry. She choreographs all of her own routines and even devises original skills, a rarity in the aerial world. Her dedication and imaginative approach set her apart on stage.

This recent event was a Victorian-only competition, and Lauren approached it without any expectations – especially because it was her first time competing in an adult category. To her surprise and delight, she won!

But the excitement didn’t stop there. At the end of the year, points from every state competition were compared to determine the national winners. That’s when Lauren discovered she had placed first nationally, too. A truly remarkable achievement!

Lauren’s story is a testament to resilience, passion, and creativity. From overcoming injury to reaching national success in a completely new sport, she continues to soar (literally and figuratively). Congratulations, Lauren!
