Year 7 Taiko Drumming Incursion

On Friday, 24 October, all Year 7 Japanese students took part in a captivating Taiko drumming incursion led by Kiyomi. Each class enjoyed a dedicated session that immersed them in the dynamic world of Taiko – a traditional Japanese art form combining rhythm and movement.

Throughout the sessions, students explored both the cultural and linguistic aspects of Taiko. They learned key Japanese expressions and commands used by drummers while also developing a deeper appreciation for the precision and teamwork required to perform this powerful musical art. Working collaboratively, students struck the drums in unison, calling out together to create vibrant, resonating sounds that filled the room with energy and focus.

Rotating between different types of drums allowed everyone to experience a variety of rhythmic roles and playing techniques. The physical coordination, discipline, and synchronised effort involved gave students a true sense of what it means to perform Taiko authentically.

By the end of their session, students left feeling empowered, energised, and inspired to continue exploring Japanese language and culture. The incursion not only strengthened their connection to their studies, but also reminded them of the joy that comes from learning through teamwork, and cultural exchange.
