Year 10 Art Making & Exhibiting

Our Year 10 Art Making & Exhibiting students have been busy producing an impressive range of artworks this term, moving between disciplined observation and imaginative experimentation. From finely rendered still life studies to bold, dreamlike surrealist landscapes, students have been exploring both the technical foundations of art and the limitless possibilities of creative thinking.
Observational Drawings of Still Life Objects
In their still life unit, students closely examined everyday objects—fruit, bottles, plants, and household items—arranged in controlled lighting. Their focus was on truly seeing: understanding shapes, proportions, textures, and the way light creates highlights and shadows.
Through drawing and painting, students translated their observations into carefully composed artworks that emphasise accuracy, tonal variation, and the relationships between objects. This process strengthened their technical skills, refined their attention to detail, and helped them create convincing and visually engaging representations of simple, familiar subjects.
Surrealism
Shifting from realism to imagination, students then stepped into the dreamlike world of Surrealism. Inspired by Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and other surrealist artists, they designed mixed-media landscapes that blend reality with the impossible.
Beginning with sketches of unusual and otherworldly scenes—melting forms, floating structures, unexpected combinations—students experimented with collage, paint, ink, and textured materials to build layered, symbolic compositions.
Throughout this unit, they pushed creative boundaries, shared ideas, and embraced imaginative risk-taking. The result: visually striking artworks that show not only strong technical ability but also thoughtful conceptual exploration.
This semester’s body of work highlights the versatility and creativity of our Year 10 artists – proving they can master both the precision of observation and the limitless possibilities of the surreal.
