Performing Arts

Hi everyone!

It’s been a fun four weeks in Performing Arts with each class starting their new units of inquiry.

This term, we are lucky to have Mrs Myszka who will be teaching three of the Performing Arts classes as well!

Foundation

Foundation students have been learning about their expressive skills (body movements, hand gestures, facial expressions and voice) and using and combining them in short scenes of their own. They have also been moving as their favourite Little Red Riding Hood characters as well as creating the setting for the story with their own bodies, such as trees or rivers in the forest.

Year One and Two

Year One and Two students are learning to devise drama from a starting point (also referred to as a ‘stimulus’ in the drama world). In the first week, they used a prop as a starting point and had to transform it into something else by using their body language, facial expression and hand gestures. Last week they devised a performance from a ‘scenario/scene’ and this week, they have used a piece of music as their starting point. These starting points sparked their creativity and imagination to inspire a piece of theatre!

Year Three and Four

Year Three and Four students  explored  Transformation of Object and Transformation of Character, which are essential components of Non-naturalistic Drama. For example, students turned an ordinary object, such as a texta, into many different things. We saw wands, telephones, toothbrushes and lots more. Students also chose two contrasting characters to transform between and used techniques such a slow motion or a sharp sound when transforming.

Year Five and Six

Year Five and Six students have been learning lots of different Improvised Drama Games that develop different drama skills. They have also learnt how the Elements of Drama (such as space, timing, contrast, mood, focus, tension and role) are incorporated into these games. They have also started designing their own drama game which they have to present to the class or a younger year group.

It’s been a very creative term so far and we’re looking forward to more inspiring performances this term!
