Literacy

Over the past few weeks we have been learning about the bossy “e “ rule and how this can help us with spelling words. The students have been identifying the middle vowel sound and trying to work out if it is a long or a short vowel sound. We have had fun trying to write two bossy “e” words into the one sentence like “cut and cute”. Some of their creations have been hilarious and very clever.

In Writing, the students have been working on Information reports and at the end of last term they chose a topic to research that interested them and created their own Non Fiction book. The students included facts, pictures, diagrams, maps, index pages and even “About the author” sections to make it look like an authentic non fiction book. This term the Year One’s are learning how to write Persuasive texts - learning about stating their opinions on different topics, explaining their reasons for and against and writing concluding statements. We had fun making our Agree/Disagree paddles and deciding what our opinions are on different topics

eg. School should finish at 1pm every day.

Maths

Maths this term has been all about Measurement - using informal units to measure our feet and items around the classroom. We have learnt that the units we use to measure objects have to be uniform and realistic in size. On Grandparents day, we even measured their shoe size to see who had the longest foot and what the difference was in length.

HAST

This semester our HAST lessons are Science based as the Year 1’s are learning about materials in our world - both artificial and natural. The students sorted many different samples into categories e.g. rubber, plastic, concrete, natural, wool, glass etc. They justified their choices and labeled where they thought the materials belonged. In Week 2, Year 1 & 2 attended the incursion “Mad about science”. Everyone was engaged and loved all of the chemical experiments, especially the exploding bag!

Grandparents Day 2025

What a special day this was on Friday of Week 1! The students were so proud to show their grandparents and special visitors their classroom and all of their hard work. It was great to see some groups playing a maths game, measuring their shoes, sharing their nonfiction book or completing a special word search. 1C even performed their “Peter Pan” song “Don’t look down” as a sneak peek to the whole school production. This was a huge hit!

We have been super busy already this term and look forward to the events and challenges ahead in Term 3. We have the Peter Pan musical coming very soon and then swimming lessons! 1C can’t wait to see Miss Cochrane return in Week 5. I am sure she will notice how much her class has grown and learnt while she has been away. Hope you enjoyed hearing about what 1C have been working on so far this term. Thank you for reading our news.
