Precilla Kaur (NWS 2022): Empowering Others as Miss Australia Legacy International 2024
From the moment I boarded my flight to Sydney to compete for the title of Miss Australia Legacy International 2024, I knew this was more than just a pageant, it was the realisation of a childhood dream. Walking the runway wasn’t just about grace and glamour; it was a symbol of courage, self-belief, and a lifetime of quietly nurtured ambition finally stepping into the spotlight.
Then, becoming Miss Legacy International 2025. It has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. This pageant isn’t about perfection; it’s about purpose. It’s about becoming an influential leader and celebrating what matters most. For me, that meant using my voice to advocate for education, especially for children who are denied access to it due to circumstances beyond their control.
Throughout this journey, I’ve had the joy of connecting with like-minded women from across the country, women who are driven not by competition but by compassion. We stood together, each of us representing a cause greater than ourselves, and it reminded me of the strength that lies in unity and purpose.
Personally, this experience has deepened my sense of calling. It reminded me that my journey is not just about personal achievement, but about using my God-given talents to uplift others. As 1 Peter 4:10 says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” This verse has been a guiding light for me throughout the competition and now, beyond it.
I hope that my story inspires others to embrace their talents, pursue their passions, and never be afraid to dream boldly. You never know what God can do through you when you step out in faith. Walk your path with purpose, and use what’s in your hands to serve, inspire, and build something that lasts.
Mariam Yacoob (NWS 2020): God, Growth and a whole lot of Gratitude
I joined Waverley Christian College in 2012, having the privilege of being part of the very first group of students to start at the Narre Warren Campus. It was truly a blessing to witness my own growth alongside the College throughout the years.
One of my fondest memories from my time as a student is the strong sense of community that existed within our year level, with the staff and across the whole school. Whether it was chapel services, everyday classroom moments, or school productions and sporting events, I always felt surrounded by people who genuinely cared and shared their love for God. The environment at the College allowed me to grow in many ways, not just academically, but spiritually and emotionally.
Life after Year 12 presented challenges I never anticipated. The structure and support I had at school were suddenly gone, and I had to navigate adult responsibilities and decisions on my own. One of the biggest challenges was staying grounded in my faith amid the uncertainty and pressures that come with adulthood. My beliefs were tested, but through those trials, I discovered a deeper relationship with God. I persevered through difficulties, remained resilient, always showed up for what mattered most, and never gave up on my dreams. For me, faith and resilience became the cornerstone of navigating this new chapter after Year 12.
When I finished Secondary, my number one goal was to always put God first, no matter what life threw my way. Although I faced personal struggles during school, the challenges after graduation were even greater. My faith was tested in ways I hadn’t expected, and I had to make a conscious decision: either give up on God’s will for my life or continue with faith, resilience and perseverance. I chose to walk by faith, and it has been the best decision I’ve ever made. That goal remains at the core of everything I do, and I always find peace when I have God at the forefront.
Today, I’m a physiotherapist, and there are many reasons why I was drawn to this field. The College helped shape a mindset of service and compassion and created a space where I could dream big. I’ve always had a strong desire to help people, especially in their moments of physical or emotional struggle. What I love most about physiotherapy is the opportunity to make real, tangible differences in people’s lives. Helping someone regain movement, manage pain, or return to activities they love is incredibly rewarding.
One piece of advice that has stayed with me is this: our identity isn’t defined by success or social status; it’s defined by being children of God. We are created with purpose, deeply loved and never alone. This truth anchored me, especially during the uncertainty of completing Year 12 during COVID. A verse that carried me then, and still does today, is Philippians 4:6–7:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Looking ahead, I’m excited about the opportunities to grow both in my career and in my walk with God. I look forward to impacting more lives through my work and stepping into new seasons where I can pursue God’s will with joy and peace, even through trials. The future holds endless possibilities when you trust God’s timing and plan.
To current WCC students, my advice is simple: don’t underestimate the value of the environment you’re in right now. Take every opportunity to learn, grow and lean into your relationship with God. Life won’t always be easy, but when your foundation is built on faith, you’ll have the strength to endure anything. Never be afraid to dream big, God places dreams in your heart for a reason. Use your talents, take risks, challenge yourself and most importantly, lean on God.
I’m truly grateful for my time at the College. It was more than just an education; it was a place that shaped my identity and gave me the courage to pursue a life of purpose. It became a safe space through tough times, a place to create memories, and a place to dream and work toward those dreams. It was a place where values, purpose, and identity were built brick by brick, lesson by lesson, prayer by prayer. (Fun fact: you can find my brick from Year 4 under the flags at the Narre Warren South Campus.)
Additionally, thank you to the teachers who went above and beyond, pouring into us not just with knowledge but with love, patience, and prayer. Thank you to the school that stood not just as a place of learning, but as a place where our faith was nurtured and where we learned to walk with Christ. Thank you to my peers for the friendships, memories, and shared journey that shaped us in unexpected and incredible ways.
May God continue to bless the College community, now and always.
Joshua Oettinger (WS 2020): Striving for What Matters, And Who It's For
Have you ever paused in the middle of a busy week and thought, "Wow, time has flown!" That feeling has come all too often for me this year!
As I look back on my schooling years, from Prep to Year 12 (2008 to 2020) at Wantirna South campus, I remember constantly wishing I could learn faster, grow up quicker, and become independent sooner. But in hindsight, one of my fondest memories from my time at WCC came in Year 12, when it finally clicked: the joy isn’t just in the destination, it’s in the journey.
I know it sounds cliché, but as my time at school came to a close, and I took a moment to let it all sink in, I realised that the real joy was in the learning, the growing, and the countless hours poured in by teachers, parents and friends. That epiphany, as late as it came, spurred my joy in learning and growing that I have realised will never cease. It also continues to raise the most important questions: What am I doing this all for? And more importantly, who am I doing it for?
Life after school has been a whirlwind. One phrase that’s stuck with me is, "If the enemy can’t destroy you, he’ll distract you." Staying focused on what truly matters has been one of my biggest post-school challenges. The world is loud, and distractions come easily.
Stepping out of the locker bay and over the precipice into the unknown, I set four goals to help me stay grounded: to continuously share my faith, finish my bachelor’s degree, get married, and start a business. At the time, each goal felt monumental. But five years on, by the grace of God, I can say I’ve reached each milestone, and I’m still learning!
These days, I work across a few different fields and love the variety. I am currently head up the team at my business, Priism Creative, helping people share their stories through photography, videography and web design. Whether it's capturing a brand’s voice or highlighting someone’s passion, I find so much joy in drawing out beauty and meaning, creatively capturing the heart behind businesses, organisations and events.
I’m also serving as a youth pastor, and it’s incredibly special to have the honour of walking alongside the next generation, pointing them toward the unconditional love of Jesus.
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received and will always pass on comes from Philippians 4:6-7:
'Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.'
That verse has kept me grounded through countless busy weeks. I’ve come to learn that when your identity is anchored in the endless joy of Christ, nothing can rob you of His peace or separate you from His love.
If there is anything I’d like you to take away from this brief reflection, it's this: make the most of today. Don’t rush through it. Treasure the moments. Embrace the challenges. And allow God to shape you through them.
Step out of your comfort zone, you’ll be amazed how far Christ can take you when you walk in obedience. And above all, take a breath. Look up at the bigger picture.
Remind yourself what you’re striving for and, more importantly, who you’re striving for.
