Leadership updates and reflections

An update from Julie

Congratulations to our Grade 6 students who had a very special week last week. They represented Wonga Park with pride at the Dream and Lead Conference, where inspiring speakers sparked ideas and motivation in our young leaders. To top it all off, their new Grade 6 jackets arrived, adding even more excitement and pride in being a valued leader in our school.

Planning Week

Throughout this week and early next week each level teams and our specialist team will have a day to plan together for Term 2.  We are very excited that our Big Idea next term is Country. It will be a wonderful opportunity for us to focus on our Reconciliation Action Plan, creating individual grade Acknowledgment of Country statements and learning more deeply about the significance of Country to First Nations people.  We are hopeful that our students will have opportunities to visit places of significance and learn about the perspectives, philosophies and practices when caring for Country.  We hope that our students hear stories and be inspired by aboriginal music, dance and art to build a deeper understanding of the amazing culture of our First Nations people. It will incorporate celebrating National Reconciliation Week, making visible our respect for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture in the physical environment of our school and actively connecting with and caring for the Country on which our school stands.  We look forward to seeing how our students take action to build knowledge, awareness and respect.

Coffee and Chat – Prep Parents

Wednesday 25th March 2:30pm-3:30pm / Friday 27th March 9:00am-10:00am

In the past we have run very successful Coffee and Chat sessions for parents around different themes. This week Liz Penny and I will be facilitating the first two for the year with the focus around how we support our prep students to develop their social capabilities and build resilience and how parents can work with us to support this growth. We warmly welcome our prep parents to attend.

Colour Run – Thursday 24th March

Excitement is growing as we get closer to our annual Colour Run! Looking forward to seeing our community come together for this fun event.  This year we have added some extra obstacles to make it even more challenging to avoid the teachers with their bottles of fluorescent colours!!  A big thank you to our Wonga Park CFA who make the finale extra special each year and to our Their Care educators who will be helping us out at the BBQ.

Hope to see you there!

Warm regards

Julie

Supporting home morning routines with a Social Story

Social Stories can be a helpful way to support children in understanding school routines and social stories. A social story can explain what happens in different situations, what others might be thinking or feeling, and what in turn children can do to respond positively. Social stories break down everyday experiences into simple steps using clear language and visuals. They really help to ensure children feel more confident and prepared.

The social story below helps to support home morning routines / getting your child/ren ready for school. You are encouraged to add your own photos or images to make the story meaningful and personalised. You can access the social story online here, or use the PDF below.

Cyber Safety Tip: Understanding Online Gaming Features

Many modern games include features such as:

  • chat functions
  • in-game purchases
  • livestreams
  • multiplayer modes

These can make games more engaging but may also allow children to interact with people they don’t know. It can be helpful to explore privacy settings and age ratings before allowing children to play online.

You are encouraged to refer to the eSafety Commissioner's information about https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/issues-and-advice/gaming/understanding-online-gaming-features for more information.
