Connect Crew

Over the past two weeks in the Connect program, students have been actively engaged in a collaborative cooking project that has supported the development of both social and practical life skills. Working in small groups, students were tasked with selecting a recipe to prepare together, which required them to communicate their ideas clearly, listen to others, and participate in group decision-making.

A key focus of this process was on persuasive communication. Students were encouraged to present their chosen recipes to the group, explaining why their option should be selected. This involved sharing reasons such as ease of preparation, ingredients required, personal preference, and suitability for the group. Through this, students practised articulating their thoughts, considering different perspectives, and respectfully negotiating with peers.

In addition to selecting a recipe, students worked on organising their time effectively to ensure they were prepared for the cooking session. This included planning ahead, allocating roles within the group, and coordinating tasks to work efficiently as a team. Throughout the activity, students demonstrated growing confidence in collaboration, problem-solving, and flexibility, particularly when managing differing opinions or unexpected challenges.

While the final dishes did not always turn out exactly as students had imagined, the process itself was a highlight. There were plenty of smiles, laughter, and a strong sense of accomplishment across all groups. Students embraced the experience, enjoying not only the cooking but also the opportunity to come together as a team, share a meal, and celebrate their collective efforts. Overall, this experience has provided students with a valuable opportunity to build communication, teamwork, and independence skills in a practical and engaging context.
