Acting Head of Sport Report

Congratulations to our Summer Sport teams who participated in the Semi-Finals and Finals series over the last two weekends. We had some very humid weather and you all should be proud of your grit at getting the task done.

Well done to our 13s Boys, Firsts Girls Basketball and First Girls Touch who were Finalists. Our Junior Girls Basketball and Junior Girls Touch Football bowed out in the Semi-Finals however played very well.

A big congratulations to our premiership winning teams: 14s Boys Basketball, Open Girls Basketball and First Boys Touch Football.

I would like to extend a big thank our coaches for their effort in developing the skills and game play of our players throughout the season. Success comes from hard work and determination, a combined effort from players and coaches. Many thanks to Mrs Harris for stepping in to assist coaching the Open Girls Basketball on Saturday despite being on a well-deserved leave.

Finally a huge thanks for our parents for getting students to and from the games or buses and a special mention to those who assisted throughout the season with scoring or bench duties! Without this help games wouldn’t go ahead!

Netball and Boys’ Football Coaches Needed!

We are still looking for coaches for Netball and Boys’ Football this season—specifically one Netball coach and two Boys’ Football coaches (Year 7 boys and Year 9/10 boys). If you have coaching experience and would be interested in helping, we would love to hear from you. Without additional coaches, there is a risk that some teams may not be able to be formed. Please contact Lauren Wade at lwade@bmgs.nsw.edu.au regarding Netball coaching, or Mrs Sandie Naumann (Football MIC) at snaumann@bmgs.nsw.edu.au for football coaching opportunities.

Match Reports

TOUCH FOOTBALL

Junior Girls

A tough game for the girls. The juniors needed to win this for a place in the grand final later that day. But SACS were on from the get-go, with more subs they were able to get the win on us. The girls showed a lot of heart not just this game, but throughout the season. Special mention to Elise who scored 2 tries down the sideline.

Firsts Girls

The Grand Final, the big dance. The girls had earned a spot in the GF throughout the season. The girls came into this game with high hopes and a good attitude. However, SACS were just too good. A more experienced and prepared side with double our subs was just too much for the girls. They went down, but not without a fight, they held their own and should be very proud of how far they’ve come this season.

First Boys

The Firsts Boys played their semi final at 11am on Saturday 28th Feb against Scots All Saints. The weather had forced all games to be played on the astro-turf, which was not what we were looking forward to. It turned out that astro-turf suits our boys quite well… The first try in semis and finals is worth 3 points, with all subsequent tries worth 2. This is to avoid any drawn games. So the pressure is on to score the first try. Within minutes, Tom relieved that stress. From then on, BMGS dominated the game, with tries from Sam (2), Xavier S (2), Xavier J (4), Kit, Flynn and even Hunter who hobbled his way across the line on an injured leg. It was such an exciting game and so great to see the boys playing so well together and sharing all the plays around. The final score was 25-4. What a fantastic Semi Final… now we waited for a couple of hours to play in the final.

Although the boys won their semi convincingly, the nerves were high as they went into their final. The opposition was Redlands and we were playing on their home ground. During the break the weather seemed to make the ground feel like a sauna, it was so hot and humid and this really affected everyone.

The first try went to Redlands… not a good start. The pressure was now even greater as we automatically had 2 tries to make up. Then Xavier S started our come-back. Going into half time we were still down, and our players were going down too, with Sam, Josh and Hunter all needing some time off. About half way into the second half Jed scored, bringing us just one point behind Redlands. Tension was high, the weather was difficult and everyone was exhausted, but the boys didn’t give up. It was literally in the dying minutes that Xavier J made a break and scored, putting us one ahead. BMGS just had to hold on to the ball for the final few minutes… which they did… and WE WON!! It was such an exciting and tough final. Congratulations on a great win, and a great season boys!

BASKETBALL

First Girls

The Firsts played their semi-final against St. Andrews who had beaten the girls by 8 points in Round 8. The girls had an outstanding defensive game keeping St. Andrews to just 28 points, winning the game 32 - 28. The whole team played well with Bella, Eadie, Lola and Georgia having particularly strong games.

In the Grand Final, the girls played the undefeated Chevalier team. After a loss to Chevalier by 19 points in Round 9 the girls were determined to make the final a closer encounter. The girls played one of their best games of the year but unfortunately missed too many shots, eventually losing the game 30-23. The game highlighted the significant improvement of the team throughout the year, and all the girls should be congratulated on their efforts.

Open Girls

BMGS came up against a strong Oxley team in the Open B Girls grand final last Saturday. The game started well for BMGS, with the team scoring some quick baskets to take an early lead. This success came from strong drives to the basket rather than outside shooting. In defence, after an unsuccessful press, the team switched to full-court man-to-man, which helped reduce Oxley’s scoring opportunities.

This was a great game to watch and it was good to see all the BMGS players contributing throughout the game to ensure the final result was in BMGS’s favour. Well done to each player for helping to secure this well-deserved result.

Special mention goes to Maggie Martin, who drove relentlessly to score under the basket, and to Zarah Snedden for her tight defence on Oxley’s big, keeping her out of the key and limiting her ability to contribute to their scoring. Congratulations girls on a well-deserved win.

13s Boys

Semi-final

BMGS produced a determined performance to defeat St Paul’s Grammar in the U13 basketball semi-final and secure a place in the grand final. Both teams started with great intensity, but BMGS’s strong defence, smart offence, quick ball movement and fast transitions helped them gain momentum. St Paul’s Grammar fought hard to stay in the contest, but BMGS maintained their lead through great teamwork and composure. It was an excellent team effort that sent BMGS through to the grand final.

Grand Final

In the U13 grand final, BMGS put in a courageous performance but were defeated by St Augustine’s by 9 points. Despite the result, the team showed incredible tenacity and determination, battling hard from start to finish and never giving up. Every player contributed and saved their best effort for the final, showing great teamwork, strong defence, and relentless energy throughout the game. It was one of their best performances of the season and a hard-fought contest, providing a fitting finale to a fantastic year.

14s Boys

The U14 Boys took on Chevalier College in a tough and physical Grand Final and came away with a hard-fought and well-deserved win. It was a fantastic contest and a great reward for the commitment and growth the boys have shown throughout the season.

In the biggest game of the year, the boys returned to our key principle of being one tight unit - having each other’s backs, playing selflessly, and competing for one another. Their high energy, determination, and excellent sportsmanship were evident throughout the game.

Chevalier’s full-court press caused the boys to rush at times and led to a few early mistakes. However, after a crucial timeout and a reminder to stay composed, the team regrouped brilliantly. The boys settled into their offence with greater patience while maintaining strong defensive pressure and energy.

Most importantly, the boys trusted one another and played as a true team to get the job done.

I couldn’t be prouder of this group and the way they represented our school. I’m excited to see what the future holds for this talented team.
