Year One Team News

with Anna, Zoe, Edan & Claire

Hello Year One families,

Toys in Motion Incursion:

Yesterday, the Year Ones had a fabulous hands-on experience learning about the forces involved in making toys move during the ‘Toys In Motion’ incursion. The students explored the forces involved in making things move which includes push and pull, gravity, torque, tension and friction. Below are some photos of the incursion:

Seeking Shoe boxes:

Later in the term, students will make a moving toy using a shoe box. Please send along any unwanted shoe boxes to school for this activity.

Hats:

Term 4 is a Sun Smart term, and the students are expected to wear their wide brimmed or legionnaire hats when outside. Students know that if they forget their hat, they are to play in designated shaded areas.

Assembly:

The Year 1 and 2 students will be hosting assemblies this term. Last week, 1B did a brilliant job of hosting assembly together with 2K. Year 1D will be hosting in Week 4 with 2G and 1K in Week 6 with 2J. Parents are warmly invited to attend, so we look forward to seeing you there.

Year One Dinner:

The much anticipated Year One Dinner is scheduled for Thursday November 7th, 2023, beginning at 4:30pm and concluding at 6:30pm.

The experience of having a meal and independently getting ready for bed in the school environment is the first stage of our sequenced camp program that develops throughout their primary schooling years. This will provide students with educational, physical and social experiences to complement the learning provided in the school environment and is designed to allow students to experience a range of activities that they may not have participated in previously.

Students will be dismissed as normal at 3:30pm and then return to school at 4.30pm. They will play games, have dinner, change into their pyjamas and brush their teeth. Parents will pick up their child at 6.30pm outside the RedBrick Hall (playground side). Please lookout for the dietary/allergy/cultural/religious limitation and dinner preference form that has gone home in book bags this week.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 3-4

Reading: During this term we will be covering stage 7.4 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. Next week we will be learning about the phoneme /oo/ represented by the graphemes u-e and ue. We will continue with the phoneme /oo/ in week 4 but instead represented by the graphemes ui and ew.

Writing: The students will begin to work on their narrative story. With lots of guided work and scaffolding, the students will create another wonderful story which they are already excited to share.

Numeracy: We will be focusing on addition and subtraction and practising different strategies to solve problems. During week 4 we will be learning to recognise and describe one-half as one of two equal parts of a whole.

Inquiry:  Our topic this term is ‘What Makes Things Move?’ and have been exploring the different forces used to make things move. Over the next few weeks, the students will make their own moving toys.

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: The Willy Kids focus is “Willy Kids are Accountable” where students will be learning about taking responsibility for their actions, fixing things up and ensuring that their work is the best it can be. In Respectful Relationships lessons, we will be focusing on learning on ‘stress management’ throughout term 4. The first topic is ‘coping with stress’ where students will learn to identify multiple ways to cope with stressful situations and deal with their fears, anger and sadness.

Warm regards,

The Grade One Team –  Zoe Kitchen & Anna Swan (1K), Edan Bacegga (1B) & Claire Davies (1D)
