Year 6 Term 4 Overviews
As we enter the final term of the year, our Year 6 students are gearing up for an exciting conclusion to their primary school journey. With a focus on refining key skills across subjects, students will continue to grow academically and personally, preparing for their transition to secondary school.
Reading
This term, students will analyse the purposes of various text types, comparing similarities and differences in their structure and features. They will reflect on how writers use words, images, figurative language, and connotations to enhance meaning, mood, and tone. As students engage with different texts, they will explore how authors use techniques such as modality, repetition, and metaphor to influence readers and shape their perspectives.
Writing
We are trying something new this term by dividing our focus between persuasive writing and narrative writing. Students will work on developing essential writing skills, including organisation, voice, sentence fluency, and presentation, to craft engaging texts. This split focus will help students sharpen their ability to express opinions clearly and creatively tell stories.
Mathematics
Our maths focus includes both geometric and practical problem-solving skills. Students will explore transformations and tessellations, identifying relationships between angles to solve unknown values. They will also practise converting between metric units and use mathematical modelling to solve real-world problems involving percentages and rational numbers, such as in financial contexts. Students will also investigate cross-sections of objects and their relationships with prisms.
Inquiry
Our Inquiry unit this term connects geography, sociology, and ethics, focusing on how a countries’ access to and management of resources shapes their culture and way of life. Students will explore topics such as land, water, and agriculture, examining their impact on cultural practices, including traditions, food, and hobbies. They will also reflect on ethnocentrism and the role of cultural understanding in fostering respect for different perspectives.
SEL
We begin the term with discussions about ethics and personal morals, focusing on how values shape decisions and behaviour and aligning these concepts with our inquiry investigations. Later in the term, the focus will shift to health education, with students exploring strategies for making healthy choices. As we prepare for the transition to secondary school, students will reflect on how they can build resilience and adaptability during times of change.
