Classroom Happenings This Week

LITERACY

This week, our literacy focus was on the digraph /ph/, which the students eagerly added to their growing list of sounds. We explored words like phone, elephant, and photograph, and students enjoyed finding and sorting words with the /ph/ sound during their literacy group activities.

We also kicked off our exciting research project as part of our Great and Small unit, where each student selected three animals to combine and create their very own imaginary creature. The buzz of creativity filled the room as students chose animals based on their unique features, such as an elephant's trunk, a lion's mane, or a kangaroo's powerful legs. With help from our Year 5 buddies, students worked on researching their animals, using books and online resources to learn about habitats, physical characteristics, and interesting facts.

We also began learning about the key features of posters, as this will be one of the final ways students present their imaginary animals. We discussed the importance of a catchy title, clear pictures, and concise information that will help showcase their learning. To further support our understanding, students read non-fiction animal books, practicing how to gather key information and record facts.

MATHS

In Maths, our focus was on exploring the different ways to make the number 6. Through hands-on activities and engaging games, students deepened their understanding of addition and number combinations. We played Dice Wars, where students rolled dice and combined numbers to make 6, and Super-Goal, a fun game where students scored points by creating different combinations of numbers that added up to 6.

In addition, we were thrilled to have Year 5/6 Maths Experts visit our class! They worked one-on-one with the Preps, helping them improve their number formation skills, which is essential for clear and accurate mathematical work. Our Preps loved having the older students mentor them, and they gained confidence in writing numbers correctly. It was a fantastic opportunity for cross-age learning, and the Preps felt proud of their progress as they became Maths Experts themselves!

Overall, it’s been an exciting and productive week in both literacy and maths, with plenty of opportunities for collaborative learning and creative thinking!
