In week nine, we started our new program 'Idols and Inspirations.' The children have thoroughly enjoyed the theme of this program and the variety of activities on offer over the two weeks. Our hope, is for the children to recognise the qualities that make a person and good role model and how their actions can inspire others.
The programmed activities encourage collaborative work to encourage the children to discuss their different ideas and opinions and ultimately build a greater understanding of the intended learning. It has been a great to see the children’s reaction to their peer’s different ideas of who their role models are. Some had chosen family members, athletes, singers and movie characters as their role models to name only a few. They have all been able to identify what positive attributes their role model encompasses and what their inspiring qualities are. The activities have also focused on what our role model or idols do that sparks inspiration within ourselves.
This program has led to some thought provoking discussions between the children and educators. They have shared stories of perseverance, kindness, and creativity and who encouraged or inspired them to strive for these qualities in their own lives. An example that stood out to me, is a child who chose a famous athlete. They chose them not only because of their talent in sport, but also for their dedication and hard work. This child expressed that this taught them the value of persistence.
As the program continues, it’s clear that the discussions and reflections on role models are having a positive impact. The children are not only recognising the positive traits in others but are also beginning to see those qualities within themselves. I am looking forward to using my observations throughout this program, in planning future activities.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday break.
