Year 4/5/6

This week in Mathematics, our students are diving into the fascinating world of chance. They are learning to identify possible outcomes from chance experiments and describe the likelihood of these outcomes. Additionally, they are investigating the concept of fairness in games involving chance.

Key Learning Areas:

  1. Identifying Possible Outcomes:

Students are conducting chance experiments and listing all possible outcomes. This helps them understand the concept of probability and how to calculate it.

  1. Describing Likelihood:

By describing the likelihood of various outcomes, students are learning to use terms such as "certain," "likely," "unlikely," and "impossible" to quantify the probability of events occurring.

  1. Investigating Fairness:

Through games and activities, students are exploring what makes a game fair or unfair. They are learning to analyse and assess the fairness of different games based on the principles of probability.

This we are doing this week that can be revisited at home are:

  • "What do you think the possible outcomes are if we flip a coin? How likely is it to land on heads?"
  • "If we roll a dice, what are the chances of rolling a six?"
  • "Can you think of a game we play at home that involves chance? How can we make sure it's fair for everyone?"
  • "If we draw a card from a deck, what are the chances of it being a red card?"
  • "How can we test if a game is fair or unfair? What would we look for?"

By discussing these questions, you can help your child deepen their understanding of chance and probability while having fun together.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child's learning journey. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out.
