Dear Families
Our Year 11 Pilgrims embark on their Pilgrimage to Cape York Peninsula on Monday. Students have been working with Mrs Janeen Murphy, Deputy Principal Faith and Mission, over the past year in preparation for this life-changing experience. Inspired by our motto Seek Justice, the Pilgrimage experience requires students to experience a totally different way of living, discern transformative moments and engage in deep reflection. The timing of the Pilgrimage coincides with the Year 11 Id Quod Volo leadership program based on the model of servant leadership. Placing them out of their comfort zone, the Pilgrimage will provide students with the invaluable experience of learning from and giving service to others far removed from their lived experience.
As the final phase of their pre-pilgrimage formation, staff and students were blessed at a moving Commissioning Mass on Wednesday. Our best wishes to all students and staff (Mr Liam Smith, Dr Ylenia Casadio, Ms Clare Galati and Mr Jordan Webber) for their incredible journey ahead. Just as the famous Paul Kelly song From Little Things Big Things Grow was composed more than 30 years ago to open people’s minds and hearts to First Nations land ownership in Australia, we hope that students will have their hearts and minds opened to new encounters experienced with the Cape York communities they will work alongside. May they reflect the abundance of God in all their work and be kept safe and well throughout their Pilgrimage journey.
Last weekend’s Music Camp was a huge success, thank you to all involved, particularly our wonderful parent volunteers, Mr James Kros and staff for their time and effort so that students could enjoy a weekend of performance and comradery with each other. Congratulations to students involved in the Years 7 and 8 Magis Personal Projects this week for their informative and well-presented displays. So, too, to Years 8 and 9 Drama students who performed this week at their Drama Nights; their confidence and creativity were impressive!
Next Friday 28 June is our annual ‘Comfy Day’. For a $2 donation to LifeLink, studetns can wear a comfy item of clothing to school (hoodie, ugg boots etc...) with their normal sports uniform. Please give generously to help those in need.
NAS Winter Carnivals
Congratulations to all Year 8 students who competed in Tuesday’s NAS Winter Carnival and Lightening Carnivals. A fun day for all despite the wet weather, a number of teams enjoyed the success of being crowned premiers for their division.
The Years 11/12 NAS Winter Carnival is next Wednesday, with all students either representing the College or participating in a wellbeing day on campus. This is a compulsory school day for students and we wish everyone a fantastic day.
St Louis House Day
This week also saw the celebration of St Louis House Day, an occasion to mark the significance of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. Born in 1568 to a noble Italian family, Aloysius Gonzaga renounced his inheritance to join the Society of Jesus at a young age. Despite his fragile health, he was dedicated to studying theology and caring for the sick, particularly during the plague in Rome. His compassion and selflessness led to his early death at the age of 23 from the plague. Aloysius Gonzaga is remembered for his deep piety and is the patron saint of young students and Christian youth. In our contemporary context, we continue his legacy to encourage students to value the more important things in life such as purposeful endeavours and supportive relationships. Thank you to Ms Carla Tripi, St Louis House Coordinator and Homeroom Teachers for leading students in a range of activities in celebration of the day.
St Louis House Prayer
Lord, help us to be inspired by the example of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. Help us to value the important things in life such as relationships with others rather than material possessions.
Lord, we thank you for the fortunate life that we have all been blessed with. May we appreciate our good health and share it with those less fortunate.
Lord, open our ears and our hearts to the lessons we learn each and every day. May these lessons bring us closer to you.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord, and with the intercession of our founders:
Pope John XXIII - Pray for us
Ignatius of Loyola - Pray for us
Mary Ward - Pray for us
Year 10 Course Counselling
This is an exciting time for Year 10 students as they consider their senior years and post-high school pathways. Students have been engaging in various pathways planning activities this term which will culminate in next week's Pathways and Transition Day. On Wednesday 26 June, students will learn more about the different courses and pathways offered in Year 11 as well as the course selection process.
To assist parents of Year 10 students through this process, the Year 10 Parent Course Selection Evening will also be held next Wednesday beginning at 7pm in the GBLT. Various staff will speak about the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) requirements, the senior school Pathways on offer for Years 11 and 12, and the course selection process.
Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews, Wednesday 17 July
Following the release of Semester One reports next week, our next Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews will be held on Wednesday 17 July (8.30am to 6.00pm) as a valuable opportunity to discuss academic progress for students in Year 7 to Year 12. Secondary Teachers will be available for a combination of online and face-to-face interviews at the following times:
- 8:30am – 12:30pm: online interviews via Microsoft Teams
- 2:00pm – 6:00pm: face-to-face interviews in the St Louis Sports Centre
Bookings via PTO will be available to parents from Monday 1 July until Friday 5 July. More information regarding the interviews will be provided next week and we look forward to seeing parents on the day.
Winter Uniform Reminder
The College uniform provides students with a sense of identity and belonging and should be worn correctly and with pride as a member of our community. A reminder that students are required to wear their blazers to and from school each day and that students wearing trousers and the classic shirt are required to have the shirt tucked in. Students wearing earrings are permitted to wear one pair of simple gold or silver studs or sleepers. Students wearing incorrect uniform will receive a uniform infringement and will have jewellery confiscated.
eRideables: Keeping Safe
eScooters and other electric rideable devices are becoming increasingly popular among young people. For students who ride their eScooters to and from school, please be reminded of the current laws regarding their use:
It has been reported that some students have been riding their eScooter in excess of the speed limit, placing them and others in danger. Please take the time to discuss the importance of road and footpath safety with your child if they own an eScooter. More information can be found at eRideables (www.wa.gov.au).
Using SmartRiders
We have received reports that not all students catching Transperth buses are tagging on and off with their SmartRiders as they should be. Transportation is free for students, but they are still required to use their SmartRiders correctly.
Beginning Term 3: Thursday 18 July
A reminder to parents that Term 3 classes will commence on Thursday 18 July following Parent-Teacher-Student interviews on Wednesday 17 July.

Robotics Club – First Lego League Expression of Interest
Are you interested in participating in the award-winning JTC First Lego League (FLL) Team?
The JTC Robotics team has won regional and national awards for the last three years and we want you to continue the trend! This year the theme is Submerged all about technology used under water.
First Lego League - Expression of Interest - Due by Friday 28 June for consideration
In 2024, John XXIII College will be sponsoring two First Lego League Teams. First Lego League is an intense project-based competition that requires teamwork and dedication. Students cannot opt to work on their own and must work well in a self-directed team environment. The coach is a mentor who will provide advice, suggestions, materials, and expertise regarding how the competition works.
Compulsory meetings for FLL are held in Semester 2 on Wednesdays from 3:10pm - 5:00pm starting Wednesday 31 July. In Term 4, there are also Sunday workshops from 11:00am - 2:00pm until the competition occurs in November.
Note: NOT all students will have the opportunity to work directly on the robot. Half the team will be responsible for the project, and half for the robot.
We will be competing in the Woodvale Regional Competition on Friday 8 November 2024 from 8:00am - 4:00pm. If we qualify, we will then compete at the Australian National Competition - West at Curtin University on Saturday 7 December. Students who are going on holiday early in December will not be considered for the teams as we work with the goal to progress.
Please understand that we will only be taking between 10 to12 students for FLL total in Semester Two and members will be notified early Term 3. For more information, please contact Mrs Davila - anna.davila@johnxxiii.edu.au.

Year 10 Outdoor Education Expedition
Monday 17 June to Thursday 20 June
The Year 10 Outdoor Education expedition is the highlight of the students’ Outdoor Education elective and offers an opportunity to further develop skills and knowledge gained during the course. They are presented with challenging experiences that require resilience, fear management and group collaboration skills. All activities are group-oriented yet provide opportunities for individual challenges to be met. The success of the camp is dependent on each individual’s effort and consideration.
This camp experience brought exactly that, and our students excelled with the help of our expert providers, Outdoor Education Group (OEG), who led the adventure learning activities which included vertical challenges such as abseiling and a high ropes challenge, hiking and general camp craft like tent construction, the use of minimal impact techniques, fire building and camp cooking. A big thank you to Kris and his crew for their efforts to supply a wonderful program for our students in which to thrive. Of course, our outstanding College staff assisted in the same regard. Students were very fortunate to have the support and expertise of Miss Ella Brindley, Mr Xavier Mitchell and Mr Nathan Munns as leaders of each of the three student groups, as well as Mr Douglas Watson, who assisted with transporting our students to and from activity and home base sites. Their time and effort are very much appreciated.
It was wonderful to see students thrive in the natural environment, encouraging each other and growing in confidence and self-belief through the week.
