Year 10 Pathway Planning Day & Expo: Wednesday 26 June
All Year 10 students will be participating in a morning of Pathway Planning information on Wednesday, 26 June. The event begins in Period 2 in the Gonzaga Barry Lecture Theatre, where Mr Bostelman and Ms Hedley will go over information about WACE, Senior School Pathways and the course selection process. Students will then hear from some Heads of Learning Areas about courses on offer for Year 11 before participating in a Pathways Expo in the Thomas More Exhibition Centre where they can talk to representatives from the five WA universities, North and South Metropolitan TAFE plus other registered training organisations. In the evening of Wednesday, 26 June, Year 10 parents are invited to an information evening all about Year 10 course selection.

INSTEP West for work experience
John XXIII College partners with INSTEP West to facilitate work experience opportunities for students wishing to complete ongoing work experience (one day per week as part of a Training Direct pathway) or longer block placements during senior school examination periods and/or holiday periods. Study Work Grow has recently released an Early Entry Guide resource, defining early entry as opposed to alternate entry and giving details and further links according to each institution participating in early offers, in each state of Australia.
Early Offers for 2025 courses in WA
APPLYING FOR 2025 UNIVERSITY ADMISSION
University applications through TISC opened on Wednesday 1 May 2024. An updated list of important dates and deadlines is available on the TISC website.
Year 12 students applying to Curtin University, Edith Cowan University (except for WA Academy of Performing Arts courses), Murdoch University and The University of Western Australia must apply through TISC. Applicants for WAAPA courses should apply directly to ECU but complete a TISC application if they wish to be considered for other ECU courses, and applicants for The University of Notre Dame Australia can choose whether to apply directly to the university, or through TISC.
Applicants for Notre Dame’s Young Achievers Early Offer Program can apply directly to the university. Applicants who select an eligible Notre Dame degree as their first preference may also be considered for an early offer via TISC. Please note, the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Assured Pathway to Medicine) is not eligible for early entry, and all applications for this degree must be made via TISC.
EARLY OFFERS
Following the release of a report by the Federal Government, the five universities have agreed that early offers to Year 12 students for 2025 admissions will not be made until Monday 2 September 2024. Further rounds of early offers will be made on Tuesday 24 September, Monday14 October, Monday 18 November and Monday 2 December. Most early offers will be conditional, so students should carefully read their offer letter so that they know what is required. Students should also be aware that not all courses are available for early offers. Generally, courses with limited places, and university enabling programs do not make early offers, but for specific lists of courses excluded from early offers, check the university websites. Early offers will continue to be made based on final Year 11 results, as it is not feasible to use mid-year Year 12 results.
TISC GUIDE
The 2025 TISC Guide will be dispatched to schools in late July as usual. TISC recognises that an increasing number of Year 12 students now apply for university before they receive their TISC Guide. The print date cannot be brought forward due to internal university calendars and approvals required along with the lead times for producing a complete hard copy document.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS BROCHURES
The Admission Requirements for School Leavers for 2025 (2024 Year 12 students) and 2026 (2025 Year 12 students) are available from the TISC website. The requirements can be found under Undergraduate>Entry Requirements>School Leavers. The brochure for 2027 (2026 Year 12 students, to assist 2024 Year 10 students with subject selection) is expected to be available by the end of May.
UNIVERSITY ADVISORY SESSIONS
The Pathways and Transition team is organizing one-to-one university advisory sessions for Year 12 students. The advisory sessions are planned for Week 2 or 3 of Term 3. Participating universities include UWA, Curtin, and Notre Dame. Advisory sessions will take place at the College, during study periods or General classes (where possible.) Interested Year 12 students must fill out this Expression of Interest form. Mrs. Kelli Beaton will be in touch via email with students who have expressed their interest.
UNIQUE STUDENT IDENTIFIER (USI)
All students completing a TISC application will need a USI. Students can create a USI here. A form of identification, e.g. driver’s license or Medicare card, is required to create a USI. Students who suspect they already have a USI can re-locate their USI here.

CURTIN UNIVERSITY UPDATES
Curtin English competency requirements change
English requirements have changed to allow any student who achieves an A grade in general English to meet English competency for Curtin. This is no longer restricted to Portfolio Entry. English requirements for Portfolio Entry have now been adjusted to a B grade in General English. For all information regarding English competency please refer to the English language requirements webpage.
NEW – Curtin Bachelor of Science (Paramedicine)
Students wishing to become a paramedic can undertake their 3-year bachelor’s degree in paramedicine. They will be taught by experienced paramedics and will gain the fundamental knowledge and skills of out-of-hospital emergency care, including evidence-based clinical best practice, emergency and crisis management, and effective communication. Students will put these skills into practice through a range of clinical placements and simulation exercises preparing them for the diverse workload of a contemporary paramedic.

New course Sem 1, 2025 Bachelor of Science (Midwifery)
This three-year (full-time) bachelor degree in midwifery prepares students for a rewarding career as a midwife. In this degree, students will gain the knowledge and skills to work in metropolitan and rural healthcare settings such as antenatal clinics, labour and birth suites, postnatal wards, special-care nurseries, breastfeeding clinics, midwifery group practice and birth centres. The current national shortage of midwives means there are excellent career opportunities across Australia.

Emerging Engineers Competition 2024
Hosted by UWA Girls+ in Engineering and OceanWorks, the 2024 Emerging Engineers Competition is now open. Designed for female students in Years 2 to 10, the competition is an open challenge in engineering that encompasses several specialisations, including civil, electrical and electronic, and environmental engineering. Students will be introduced to the engineering research and design process in a real-world context as they work towards an innovative design for a low-carbon footprint house to be powered in 2040. Registrations close Friday, 28 June 2024, 5pm.

John XXIII College is offering Year 11 students the opportunity to complete UWA+Starter micro-credentials in Semester 2 2024. Interested Year 11 students should fill out this EOI form ASAP.
UWA+Starter micro-credentials are designed to meet secondary students' flexibility requirements, UWA+Starter micro-credentials focus on providing secondary students with the opportunity to study subjects online or in mixed mode with the school.

Important subjects for tertiary study in Victoria
While not an exhaustive list, this resource is a simple and useful guide to the majority of university courses at Victorian Universities and a number of TAFEs. Students should also seek individual guidance specific to their interests and verify subject requirements and other prerequisites.
Schools Recommendation Program
The University of Tasmania’s Schools Recommendation Program is a program allowing Australian Year 12 students to apply for up to five courses and receive a conditional offer before the final results are released.
So, rather than an ATAR, the application is based on a student’s school recommendation and their Year 11 results. It has been designed to give students confidence in completing their Year 12 and receiving a university place in 2025.
Applications open 27 June 2024, and there are a number of application rounds, and applications can be submitted right up to 4 October 2024.
Note: students who apply by 29 July will be eligible for a main round offer in September. Applicants will be notified of their success after UTAS has received the recommendation from their school.

Studying the Bachelor of Paramedicine at UTAS
The Bachelor of Paramedicine is offered as a two-year, full time (fast-track) program, at two of the University of Tasmania’s campuses, Hobart, Tasmania, and at its Rozelle Campus in Sydney, NSW.
Throughout the degree, students have the chance to learn skills in small groups, and then apply what they learn to professional experience placements within ambulance services. The course is taught by qualified paramedics, both on UTAS staff and through the university’s connections with the local healthcare sector. There is a low student/teacher ratio during the clinical practical experiences, which provides students with individual attention and support throughout their studies.
Graduates of course allows students to work in complex, dynamic and sometimes extreme environments. Graduates will possess the expertise and values to have a positive impact on the quality of life for their community and will be equipped to work around the world.
Importantly, this course is accredited by the Paramedicine Board of Australia (the National Board), and graduates of the program can apply for registration as a paramedic with the National Board via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) website.
The VCE entry requirement for standard entry is an ATAR in the region of 75.00. Alternatively, non-Year 12 students who have completed a Diploma of Nursing (the approved program of study for enrolled nurses), or a Diploma of Paramedical Science, or a Diploma of Emergency Health Care, or a combined JMED and Diploma of Nursing (ADF) may be eligible to apply.

Veteran Family Pathway (VEP)
ACU is committed to supporting both veterans and their families accessing tertiary education. The VEP – family pathway recognises the challenges military families may face as a result of service.
Often for the family members of ADF personnel there can be significant barriers when pursuing educational/employment goals due to service commitments such as posting cycles, deployments and/or locality. This pathway aims to provide recognition of these challenges and sacrifices by giving the opportunity to access a range of study options, increasing employability and opening the door to meaningful employment.
This entry pathway is available to any partner, spouse, or child over the age of 18 of current/previous serving ADF personnel.

Concordia College International Excellence Scholarship
Students considering studying in the USA might like to find out more about Concordia College’s International Excellence Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded automatically to all admitted international students from $11,000 to $17,000 USD per year for the 2024-2025 academic year. The amount awarded is determined by the strength of the student's academic performance in high school.

AIQS Donald Napier Scholarships

AIQS offers a number of scholarships each year for Year 12 students who qualify for entry into a Quantity Surveying, Construction Economics, Construction Management (Economics) or other appropriate course at an AIQS accredited university in Australia.
There are four scholarships offered each year:

- First Nations people (Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander)
- Disadvantaged (financial, carer, medical condition or disability, regional or remote)
- Diversity (including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, age, religion, marital status, language)
Charles Sturt Transgrid Civil Engineering Scholarship

The Transgrid Civil Engineering Scholarship fund will support 100 Charles Sturt engineering students over four cohorts with $20,000 each over four years. All students applying to study engineering at Charles Sturt are encouraged to apply for these scholarships and the funds can be spent however it’s needed – whether that’s the costs associated with your study, living expenses or learning resources.

Global Voices Fellowship

The Global Voices Fellowship supports young Australians (18-30) to have an unparalleled opportunity with experience in policymaking and international diplomacy.
You don’t need experience in international relations or policy to apply. We are looking for young people with a demonstrated interest in global issues, an ambitious spirit and the ability to communicate their ideas with the world effectively.
ECU School of Engineering
ECU School of Engineering is offering $20,000 scholarships to high performing Year 12 students who wish to study Engineering at ECU in 2025 and are on track to achieve an ATAR of 94 or above.
Nominations are now open. ECU are pleased to invite all secondary schools to nominate any high performing students who are interested in studying Engineering for these scholarships (let Ms. Hedley know if you wish the school to nominate you.) Alternatively, interested students can also self-nominate.

Murdoch 2025 Ngala Kwop Biddi Brighter Futures Scholarship $12,000- one awarded per WA school
Murdoch University has, from its foundation in 1974, been a university of difference associated with environment and conservation, social justice and inclusion.
The Ngala Kwop Biddi Brighter Futures Scholarship aligns with the University’s strategic themes of Sustainability; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and First Nations. Each Western Australian Secondary School will be able to nominate one of their graduating Year 12 students, who by their leadership and activity has effected positive change in their School or community, related to one of the three strategic themes.

Construction Training Fund Scholarship 2025 Now Open
The CTF Scholarship program is designed for students who will be commencing years 11 and 12 in 2025. This fully funded program offers students the opportunity to work towards a Certificate II in Building and Construction while still attending school. Depending on their chosen pathway, selected students will attend an RTO one or two days a week for either one year or two years. Students will also have the chance to gain practical experience through on-site work.

Murdoch University has, from its foundation in 1974, been a university of difference associated with environment and conservation, social justice and inclusion.
The Ngala Kwop Biddi Brighter Futures Scholarship aligns with the University’s strategic themes of Sustainability; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and First Nations. High School Medical Experience in Cambodia
Projects Abroad is running a new medical program in Cambodia. It will be a good mix of hospital time and community health, which will be a real immersive experience for the students, who will also gain a lot of cultural insight. Of particular interest is that this program will be running during the break at the end of term 3, starting on 22 September 2024, along with another date in December.

Curtin University (Medicine) - Casper Test Requirement
If you will be applying to Curtin University (Medicine) this year, apart from the UCAT, applicants will also need to register and complete the Casper Test, which is conducted by Acuity Insights.
- Applicants will be ranked for the interview offer on the basis of their Casper score, UCAT score and ATAR.
- All applicants (other than Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders) must complete the Casper Test.
- School leavers and Curtin Course Switchers must sit the Undergraduate Casper Test. Non-school Leavers (Graduates) will have to sit the Postgraduate Casper Test.
- Casper scores are valid only for the next available admissions year. Applicants should only complete the test in the year immediately preceding their planned year of admission. Applicants re-applying for the Medical Entry in a subsequent year must re-sit the Casper Test.
- The Casper Test is held nationally and is sat online from home.
- Applicants are responsible for making their own arrangements to register for the Casper Test.

University Clinical Aptitude Test
The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is an admissions test used by the UCAT ANZ Consortium of universities in Australia and New Zealand for their medical, dental, and clinical science degree programs. Universities requiring the UCAT are listed at this link - Universities requiring the UCAT but also listed below. Students intending to apply for courses requiring the UCAT at any of these universities are reminded that they will need to book a test.
Bookings will open on 5 March 2024 and close 17 May 2024. The testing dates will be from 1 July 2024 to 9 August 2024.
Students who are preparing for entry into any of these courses are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the format of the test at UCAT Test Format and the practice tests and preparation material provided at UCAT Preparation.

Getting into Medicine in WA
There is good reason to believe medical students are outstanding.
If you want to apply for medicine:
- Take chemistry: Chemistry is a pre-requisite subject for medicine at most universities across Australia.
Entry to Medicine for 2025 (UCAT)
Only Curtin University in Western Australia takes students into medicine straight from school*. It was designed as a pathway for West Australian school leavers.
Candidates from rural and regional areas and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds will be prioritised.
- Rural and remote applicants: The Medicine Faculty at Curtin is keen to address the shortage of doctors in the bush in WA. Contact Associate Professor Keith McNaught - Rural Academic Lead, Curtin Medical School at Keith.Mcnaught@curtin.edu.au
There were over 3000 applicants for the 120 places being offered at Curtin in 2024.
- Applicants must have an ATAR of 95 or higher, including Chemistry, with a final score of 50 or higher. (See P4 of the Admission Guide for details.)
- A competitive score on the Universal Clinical Aptitude Test. Bookings for the Test open 5 March. Testing begins 1 July.
- Applicants then take the Casper Test which was introduced by Curtin last year.

When it comes to planning your future career, there’s always more than one road to success. While university is usually the most popular route, an apprenticeship can be a practical and rewarding alternative. Let’s explore the advantages of starting an apprenticeship vs heading to university, and why it might be the right choice for you.
Benefits of apprenticeships over university
While university is a great way to become qualified for some careers, it’s definitely not for everyone. And these days, there are apprenticeships available in a huge number of industries, from construction and hospitality to business and arts. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why you might like to do an apprenticeship vs university.
Hands-on learning experience
Apprenticeships are unique in the way they offer a hands-on approach to learning. Instead of spending most of your time in a classroom, you’ll have the opportunity to work directly in your chosen field. This means you’ll gain practical skills and experience right from the start, and is a great way to apply what you learn in real-world situations.
Earn while you learn
Perhaps one of their biggest benefits is that apprenticeships come with a pay check – you’re essentially being paid to learn and grow in your chosen career. The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Year 12 Program gives students that are about to start Year 12 a broader understanding of study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Staying on campus at university colleges, students are immersed in science and technology. Participants:
- participate in tours of science and technology facilities,
- learn about cutting-edge research,
- engage with industry partners and research providers,
- learn about university, training and STEM career pathways,
- mix with like-minded students their age from all over Australia,
- participate in social and team building activities, and
- network with former NYSF participants.
In January 2025, the NYSF Year 12 Program will run two summer sessions at:
- The Australian National University, Canberra (6 –14 January)
- The University of Queensland, Brisbane (15 – 23 January)
As part of the application process, any students experiencing financial hardship or another disadvantage that negatively impacts their ability to attend the program may apply for an NYSF Access and Equity Scholarship. Students are also encouraged to approach Rotary Clubs after they have started their program application if they need funding support to attend the NYSF Year 12 Program.

Projects Abroad has launched Law & Human Rights in Tanzania designed for teens aged 15 to 18. This project offers a unique opportunity to enter the world of justice and make a difference in the vibrant city of Arusha.
Alongside local lawyers, you’ll work on real legal cases, empowering women to defend their rights. You’ll also campaign for critical issues such as illiteracy and domestic violence.
Living with fellow teenagers, you’ll prepare presentations, conduct interviews, and attend court hearings. This provides unbeatable hands-on experience while actively contributing to human rights in Tanzania.

Genius Armoury Cyber Security for Autistic Students
Genius Armoury offers a range of courses to help introduce people to cybersecurity, exploring some of the fundamentals of coding, threats and exploits, networking and more. Available to anyone and free to complete, modules in the full course take around 30-90 minutes to complete.

Essential Personnel Employment Buddy Program
The Employment Buddy Program is a free program for young people with disability between the age of 15-24.
The program runs for 1 x day per week for 12 weeks.

Improving employment outcomes for people with disability
The Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre has released an Employment and Disability in Australia report which reveals increasing employment of people with a disability by 10 per cent could add $16 billion to economic output yearly.
The Report details the benefits of employing people with a disability, including addressing economic advantages, allowing individuals to find meaningful work, gain job satisfaction, autonomy and promote overall wellbeing.

Curtin’s Assess Plan outlines the reasonable adjustments recommended for students with a disability/medical condition. Potential students who have a disability should contact Curtin early so that there is plenty of time to design the perfect plan for entry to a uni course.

Support for Young Carers
There are over 40,000 young people in WA who have a sibling, parent or family member with disability or physical or mental health challenges – they are called ‘young carers’. It is important to recognise that young carers take on extra practical and emotional responsibilities that other young people don’t have to.
The support that young carers provide does not go unnoticed. There is free support and a team dedicated to helping young carers thrive and reach their individual goals.

Support for Australian Apprentices with Disability
The Australian Government provides support to Australian Apprentices with disability to help them reach their full potential as skilled workers. A range of assistance is available, including tutorial, mentoring and interpreting services, as well as the Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support (DAAWS) incentive, which is paid to employers.

Marilyn Garbin has been around the WA careers education world for some time. She is providing short courses that develop soft skills, for people with disability.
Some courses like these have been cut from TAFE, and Marilyn is addressing the needs identified by families of people with disability.

Optometry Courses in Australia in 2024
The Good Universities Guide - Optometrist states that Optometrists perform eye examinations to determine the presence of vision problems and other eye conditions and disease. They treat or manage these problems by prescribing glasses, contact lenses, optical aids, vision therapy, medication (in the form of eye drops) or referral to an eye surgeon when required. Optometrists need to have a patient and caring manner; be able to carry out accurate and precise work, have good communication skills, and enjoy helping people.
To become an optometrist a student usually has to study optometry at university. Alternatively, they can complete a degree in vision science or a relevant area at university, followed by a postgraduate qualification in optometry. Prerequisite subjects, or assumed knowledge, in one or more of English, mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics are normally required. Entry to postgraduate courses usually requires completion of an appropriate bachelor degree. A number of universities in Australia offer these degrees. Universities have different prerequisites, and some have flexible entry requirements.
