INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL 2.0

An Instructional Model is a framework where teachers can articulate what they are teaching and why they are teaching it. It provides a consistent sequence through which learning in each lesson is structured and delivered. Our school has had a well embedded Instructional Model for many years and this year has provided an opportunity to review our model and continue to evolve it.

Like the original, our new Instructional Model 2.0 is built on evidence and best practice including the Department of Education and Training’s High Impact Teaching Strategies and Practice Principles for Excellence in Teaching & Learning. As a high performing school, we are constantly striving to reduce any variations between classrooms. This Model supports teachers to develop a shared language about practice.

Our planning documents are also being updated to reflect the changes to our Instructional Model. We have started with mathematics in line with the new mathematics curriculum that is being rolled out this year for implementation next year.

INQUIRY LEARNING IN ACTION

Over recent weeks and continuing this week, many of our classes have participated in a range of excursions and incursions. These have all been organised to provide rich learning opportunities for our Inquiry Units. A G.R.E.A.T. example of this was our Year 3 team visit to Healesville Sanctuary.

As such we are sending a massive shout out to our Year 3’s. Not only did they have a fantastic day, but we have also had feedback that our students represented our school with pride. Their awesome respect, listening, questioning and engagement ensured they were able to learn so much from the experts and environment at the Sanctuary.

CANTEEN PRICES

As mentioned in the newsletter last week, School Council has reviewed the canteen menu and approved a range of price increases on some items commencing from the start of term 3. Decisions like this are not made lightly. The purpose of our canteen is to provide a service to our families by providing a range of options for student lunches and counter sales. Our canteen is not a fund-raising entity and over the last few years has run at a small loss. These price increases are aimed at ensuring the canteen can maintain itself as a cost neutral program.

CROSSING SAFELY

Our Banyule City crossing supervisors have asked us to remind all our families of the rules around using the crossings safely.

  1. Always stand behind the marked line when waiting to cross.
  2. Always cross between the flags (there are white lines marked on the road to assist with this) and do not deviate off route while using the crossing.

STAY ACTIVE THIS WEEKEND

Long weekends are usually a GREAT time to get out and about as a family. Even though the weather will be cold and even rainy, there are plenty of options for physical activity in our local area. I love the local walking tracks along the Plenty River and often see school families walking and riding bikes along these trails.

We know that when children participate in regular physical activity, it boosts their physical and mental health and improves academic performance.

Physical activity throughout the day also improves concentration, and the ability to retain information and solve problems.
