Golden 10 Minutes - 8.50 - 9am9am

💛 The 'Golden 10' is a valuable time to quickly touch base with your child's teacher to let us know if there have been any issues with your child overnight that may impact their day.

💛 If you require more time than a quick handover, we ask that you make a time to meet with us after school, where we can give you our attention without interruptions and the busyness of the morning.

💛 Term 2 is a busy term of learning and we will be starting Reading Groups at 9am. We kindly ask that parents refrain from entering the classroom now, and that you allow your child's teacher to greet them at the door and assist them to independently prepare for the day. After a goodbye hug has occurred, we also ask for your understanding in moving away from classroom doors, as this removes temptation for your child to run after you.

iPads

Over the holidays, we encourage you to look into purchasing an iPad for your child to assist wth their learning at school, if you are yet to do so. We will begin our iPad journey in mid Term 2. We will email through information early next term with regards to the timeline.

📸Learning Snapshots:

Learning snapshots are sent home regularly throughout the year to celebrate your child's learning. Each term, there will be a literacy, maths and specialist snapshot. In term 1, these pieces of work will have a little explanation about the task attached to them. When iPads come to school, they will come home on iPads. Please celebrate your child's effort in the task.

Keep an eye out in the Wonga Weekly to see if a snapshot is coming home!

CURRICULUM

📚 Reading

We will continue our learning of the comprehension strategy,  'Problem and Solution'.

We will set the reading goal of looking at how many words are on the page and making sure we point to the words as we read. Keep an eye out for a special pointing stick that will come home at some point in the week!

In Reading Groups this week, students will be participate in a Guided Reading group, as well as completing activities related to problem and solution, phonics and learning high frequency words.

What can you do at home?

-Help your child read their take home book.

-Practise the Magic Words.

-Use the letters of 'SATPIN' , /c/, /h/, /k/, /m/, and /r/ to make CVC words and read them eg. rat, can, cat, nip, pin, etc.

-Read to your child at bedtime. Ask them about character, setting, problem and solution in the story.

🔡 Phonics

Students will learn about the letter /r/ and its sound. They will learn the cued articulation and brainstorm words that begin with /r/.

We will revise the sounds that we have already learnt to to construct and deconstruct words. We will use the letters of 'SATPIN', as well as /c/, /h/, /k/, /m/ and /r/, to decode CVC words.

What you can do at home?

-Ask your child to show you the cued articulation for /r/ and the sound it makes.

-Discuss words that start with /r/ and the words that contain this sound.

--Use the letters of 'SATPIN', /c/, /h/, /k/, /m/ and /r/ to make CVC words and read them eg. ham, pit, sip, sat, tap, pan, etc.

📝 Writing

Students will focus on handwriting, particularly the letter 'r'.  We will start 'have a go' writing in the form of Four Square Writing. Students will draw a picture about Easter, have a go at writing a sentence to match, the teacher will scribe the sentence and then students have another go at their sentence.

What can you do at home?

-Help your child to write their name in 'school' writing - a capital letter followed by lower case letters.

-Help your child to develop their pencil grip / pinch.

-If your child enjoys writing at home, encourage correct formation of letters (particularly focussing on 'entry and exit' points - where the letter starts and finishes)

🔢  Maths

Students will explore shapes, particularly the four common shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle. We will be explore the language and description of shapes, including 'sides' and 'corners'. We will also go on a shape walk to look at shapes in our environment.

What can you do at home?

-Continue to count at home and play counting games.

-Find shapes around the house / environment and name them.

📸Learning Snapshot: Students will bring home a number line to show more and less.

-Use the learning snapshot to discuss concepts of 'more' and 'less' and 'bigger' and 'smaller'. Eg. "Can you show 1 more than 8 or on your number line? Can you show 1 less than 5 or on your number line?"

🌏 CBL - Community

We will celebrate being part of our Prep community by coming together to sing songs, share stories and play games. This will be a lovely way to celebrate the (almost) end of Term and to acknowledge the successful completion of our Challenge 'Make our classroom a happy community'.

💻 Cyber Safety

We will start our learning about Cyber Safety, in readiness for bringing iPads next term. We use the Cyber Safety Project lessons to deliver this content. Lesson 1 focuses on what is the Internet? We will explore all the ways we can use the internet for living, learning and playing online.
