YEAR 9 FOOD TECHNOLOGY

The Year 9 students have had an exciting start to the year getting used to the East campus kitchen. Term 1’s focus was reintroducing kitchen safety, hygiene and developing the essential skills needed to complete their practicals.

Across term 1 students completed a booklet which covered a range of food topics. Students discussed food preservation techniques and understood how to slow down food spoilage. Students looked closely at this by making their own pickles for their hamburger practical in week 4. Students also discovered food poisoning, food additives and factors that influence food choices. They completed a range of different sweet and savoury foods such as Pineapple upside down cake, Mini marble cakes, Chicken and chorizo paella and Thai green chicken curry.

Term 2 promises new opportunities for students. The Year 9 students have an exciting opportunity to develop their own breakfast in their Breakfast Learning Task. Students get to create their own breakfast meal using some core ingredients and then adding their own into their meal. As we continue through term 2, it is important for students to make sure that students bring a container to each of their food technology classes and are encouraged to show off their cooking skills at home.
