BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN THE TWO CAMPUSES

As McKinnon continues to grow as a school and a community, the English faculty is always looking for ways to connect each campus and support all of our English students. I encourage English teachers at East to take their classes out for a walk to the McKinnon Rd library where students have the opportunity to browse new books and borrow any that interest them.

Recently, Melinda Howard brought her 9EAL class over and here is what two students had to say about the experience:

During periods 5 and 6 one Thursday, our EAL class walked from East campus to visit the library at McKinnon Road Campus. On the way to the library, we were exhilarated not only about visiting the library, but also meeting our future EAL teachers. After we arrived at the library, Ms Howard introduced the librarians to us, Ms Watson then introduced the facilities in the library and recommended to us a few books to read. It was fun exploring the library and choosing books to read.

It was a great experience to know how to borrow new books via our Chromebook, to access the reading lists from East Campus and to reserve a book from McKinnon Road Campus. When we got stuck at choosing what to read, the teachers, Ms Oh, Ms Georgiou and Ms Zhang helped us find our “dream” book. The “dream” book helps us to be motivated to read in English. We believe that the “dream” book can help us improve our English skills.

Overall, this little adventure in the library helped us to gain a better understanding of the library at McKinnon Road Campus.

If classes find it difficult to visit the McKinnon Rd Library, there are quite a few ways our librarians provide access for students and teachers.

  • There is a large collection of fiction and nonfiction books available for students on level 2 near the Student Managers' Office at East Campus. New books are added throughout the year;
  • Students can reserve books via the Library catalogue. These reservations are delivered to East Campus each week;
  • Students can suggest books for the Library to purchase. These books are reserved for those students to borrow. See the Book Suggestion Form;
  • Each month our librarians place a link on Compass that displays all the new books that have been purchased during that month;
  • Students can access the Library catalogue and online resources, such as online encyclopedias, Wheelers ebooks & audiobooks, referencing generator and online newspapers;
  • Students can access the Library Google Site. https://sites.google.com/mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au/library/mckinnon-sc-library

There is also a page on the Library Google Site for East Campus students and staff to refer to: https://sites.google.com/mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au/library/east-campus

I would like to thank our librarians, Janene Watson and Anna Zhang, for working tirelessly to support the reading passions of our entire school community and to bridge the gap between the two campuses.
