VCE APPLIED COMPUTING

Applied Computing is the first opportunity for students to analyse, design, develop and evaluate digital solutions to meet the specific needs of clients at a VCE level. Students will acquire and apply knowledge and skills to use digital systems efficiently, effectively and innovatively when creating digital solutions.

Students explore the legal requirements and ethical responsibilities that individuals and organisations have with respect to the security and integrity of data and information. As students follow the structured problem-solving methodology, they will develop an understanding of the technical, social and economic impacts of information systems, both currently and into the future.

The topics covered this year include:

  • Data Analysis
  • Programming
  • Innovative Solutions
  • and Networks.

Students started the year with the Data Analysis topic where they learnt to use software tools to create data visualizations in response to teacher-provided requirements and designs. Students used Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access and Infogram to manipulate data to create a range of charts to convey information.

Currently, students are working through the Programming topic. Students are writing programs using Visual Basic VB.NET to create a working software solution in response to teacher-provided solution requirements.

Below is an example of a program (and their code!) that students have created during this topic:

Finally, World Password Day was on Saturday 4 May! Here are some tips to stay safe online:

  • Strong & Unique Passwords: Avoid using birthdays or pet names and never reuse a password on different services;
  • Keep it Secret: Never share your password with anyone and don’t log into your account on other people's devices. If you suspect someone knows your password, see IT or reset it immediately;
  • Log Out!: Always log out or lock your computer if you step away, especially on shared devices;
  • Beware the Phish: Look for suspicious links and beware of entering your login details on unfamiliar websites. Phishing scams try to trick you into revealing your password with emails and websites that look official but aren’t. Tips here.

Stay safe online!
