Primary School

We have had an action-packed term and I am thankful for everyone’s support.

There are several reminders about Primary routines to highlight. The teachers will be opening classrooms at 8.35 each morning. The first bell is at 8.40 which is when students will be expected to settle into their class morning routines before the 8.45 bell. At 8.45, students will commence the formal school day so we ask that all students are present by this time.

On Monday, Tuesday (Prep-Yr3) and Thursday (Yr 4-6), all parents are invited to attend Flag and Chapel. Flag is our weekly assembly and takes place each Monday morning on the basketball court, weather permitting. Chapel commences in the Middle Primary breakout space at 8.45 on Tuesday and Thursday.

Have a safe and blessed Easter.

Butterfly Adventures

This term our Prep learners embarked on their exploration of the story "The Hungry Caterpillar". This unit allowed our students to delve further into the wonders of metamorphosis and the different stages of a caterpillar's lifecycle.

Throughout this unit, our students have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the transformation of caterpillars into beautiful butterflies. They observed the emergence of butterflies from their chrysalis, marvelling at the remarkable process of metamorphosis. This hands-on experience piqued their curiosity and provided them with a developing understanding of the natural world.

One of the highlights of this unit was the chance for our students to interact with live butterflies through the Butterfly Adventure company. This incursion allowed them the opportunity to hold and investigate these enchanting creatures up close fostering a greater appreciation. Through this experience, our learners developed a sense of empathy and a desire to protect and nurture these delicate creatures.

Beyond the excitement of observing butterflies, our students also gained knowledge about the specific needs of a butterfly throughout its life cycle. They learned about the importance of nectar as a food source and the significance of plants in the butterfly's habitat. By understanding these critical elements, our students have developed a greater awareness of the interconnections and dependencies within ecosystems.

Additionally, our learners were taught how to identify the gender of a Monarch butterfly, further enhancing their understanding of the species. This activity not only provided an opportunity to develop observation skills but also encouraged our students to engage in scientific inquiry and critical thinking.

It is evident that our students thoroughly enjoyed their time exploring "The Hungry Caterpillar" and engaging with its central themes. This unit has not only fostered a love for literature but also facilitated a deep connection with the natural world and its diverse life forms. Additionally, it has supported the development of important skills such as observation, inquiry, and empathy.

Harmony Day

Our Harmony Day event took place this year on March 21st. As part of our commitment to celebrating and appreciating the gifts of diversity, Harmony Day provided our students with an opportunity to explore and embrace different cultures, promoting a sense of belonging within our school community.

One of the highlights of the day was the presence of First Nations Dancer, Majeda Beatty. Majeda engaged our students in an educational and interactive session, where she taught them about the songs, dances, and musical instruments of significance to First Nations culture. This experience not only enabled our students to learn about the rich cultural heritage of Australia's First Nations people but also promoted respect and understanding.

Furthermore, students within our primary school actively participated in various learning opportunities within classes, which showcased our commitment to learning in harmony. By actively involving our students in these pivotal discussions, we can live out our school values whilst also strengthening social connections and fostering unity amongst our students.

Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge

We are super excited to announce that Lakeside College will again be participating in the annual Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge, starting from the beginning of Term 2. We would like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to all families and students who are eager to get a head start on this exciting opportunity over the upcoming term break.

The Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge is designed to promote and celebrate our learners' love for reading. This Challenge motivates our students to read a specified number of books throughout the year, while also providing them the opportunity to record their efforts online. Since its inception in 2005, this initiative has witnessed an impressive engagement from our students, with over 4.3 million participants having devoured more than 60 million books.

In preparation for the Challenge, students will be provided with the necessary details, usernames, and passwords this week. This information will enable them to log in and record the books they read from the comfort of their homes. Additionally, within the school environment, our students will actively participate in the Challenge by engaging with in-class books specially curated to enhance their reading skills.

We strongly encourage all families and students to embrace this wonderful opportunity to immerse themselves in the joy of reading either as a family or independently. By participating in the Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge, students not only foster a lifelong love for literature, but also improve their literacy skills, broaden their knowledge, and enhance their overall academic success. Once completed, students who have met the challenge will receive their very own certificate.

At Lakeside College we firmly believe that reading transcends the boundaries of the educational realm and plays a significant role in personal development. Encouraging your child to embark on this literary adventure allows them to explore new worlds, perspectives, and experiences, nurturing their imagination and creativity.

We would like to express our gratitude for your continuous support and involvement in promoting literacy within our school community. Together, we can unlock the boundless treasures that lie within the pages of books and instill a love for reading that will accompany our students throughout their lives.

If you have any questions or require further information about the Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge, please do not hesitate to contact either your classroom teacher, Melissa Harford or Deb Mibus. We eagerly look forward to embarking on this inspiring journey with you and your child, as we foster a generation of lifelong learners and passionate readers.
