Year One

2024

Dear Year One Community,

We made it to the end of Term One! We would like to say a BIG congratulations and thank you to all the students and families for their hard work and support throughout the last nine weeks. There has been a lot going on in the last couple of weeks, with Ride to School Day, Harmony Day, as well as the Easter Bunny's visit, but every person has tackled these events with the Learner Profile attributes of inquiring and open minds.

Harmony Day

In Australia, Harmony Day is traditionally celebrated on the 21st of March every year. It is a day on which we recognise the many cultures that make up our beautiful country. In Year One, we learned about the meaning of Harmony Day by watching the following video by Ozzie:

We then also completed an Acrostic poem to show our understanding of poetry and Harmony Day.

Saltwater College P-9 celebrated Harmony Day a week later, on the 28th of March, by hosting a range of activities from face painting/henna, to games, and encouraging everyone to wear their cultural clothes. It was so lovely to learn more about everyone's cultural backgrounds!

Reading

In Reading, the Year One students have continued to practice the comprehension strategy of 'Visualising', by reading short passages, identifying the adjectives, and drawing the images they formed in their minds.

We also started learning about text connections. A text connection is when we make a link between a book we are reading and ourselves (text-to-self), another book (text-to-text), or the events around us (text-to-world). This past week, we focused on text-to-self connections.  Students worked independently to read a book of their choosing and then discussed what that book reminded them of or whether they had similar experiences.

Writing

In Writing, we finished our unit on Poetry by revising the different types of poems we have written so far. Students then picked their favourite type and wrote one last poem.

We finished off the term with an introduction to Recounts. A Recount is where we write about something that has happened in the past. Students used the 5Ws questions to help recall important information about different events. The 5Ws stand for: Who, What, Where, When, and Why?  We will continue our work on Recounts next term.

Maths

In Maths, the students continued to expand their knowledge of Place Value by explaining that one ten is ten ones and showing how many tens and ones are in a number.

To cultivate their knowledge of Place Value the students made their own Place Value Monster. The students began by choosing a number, e.g. 32, and then they cut out the groups of tens and ones that number has and built their monster using those values.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the students continued to learn about emotions and different strategies to manage those emotions.

To showcase what they have learned throughout this unit, students used their creativity to explain what they had learned, how we express different emotions, and how we can regulate our emotions through visual or performance arts.
