Year Five
Dear Year Five families,
Congratulations to all our students for enduring through the term in preparation for Naplan and successfully completing all exams. We've all worked hard as a team and will continue to reach high standards in our teaching and learning as the year progresses.
In Reading, students have focused on the critical skill of sequencing texts, understanding the importance of logical order to deepen comprehension. Their writing sessions have been a blend of creativity and persuasion, with students focusing on researching into their chosen leader that links to our unit of inquiry. They have also engaged in a summative task that represents their overall learning of the unit, researching a chosen leader. In mathematics, we have focussed on place value, specifically reading and writing six digit numbers and applying our knowledge of place value in riddles and various worded problems.
Guest Speaker
This week, students have also had the opportunity to hear from Cr Susan McIntyre who visited as our guest speaker to share her perspective on leadership.
Students showed all aspects of the learner profile as they eagerly heard from Cr McIntyre as she recounted her own leadership journey to becoming Mayor and beyond. Cr McIntyre spoke of the family and community support she had as well as those who inspired her along the way to take action. She reinforced the learning that students have undertaken, encouraging them to develop key leadership attributes of resilience, persistence, skills to empower others, and implored them to give 100% effort to everything they do. The quality of questions students shared with her was heartening to hear and a true reflection of their work throughout our leadership unit.
We extend our thanks to Cr McIntyre for taking the time out of her busy schedule to speak with our Year Five students.
Harmony Day
Saltwater College celebrated Harmony Day on Thursday 28th of March with students invited to wear orange or share their cultural dress. We also celebrated this day with a picnic on the grass with the whole school sharing their events with the community.
Thank you to those who were able to join us and spend some time with our fabulous year level.
Upcoming Science Works Excursion
As part of our next unit of inquiry transdisciplinary theme, 'Where We Are In Place and Time', the Year Five's will be going to Science Works for an engaging learning experience. The unit will focus on Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander people's culture and story telling through the constellations with a visit in the planetarium as well as an experience in the Lightning room looking at electricity and forces in action. This excursion will take place in May over two days with each group attending one day each. More information will be provided closer to the time as to the date and classes in each group.
Upcoming Camp Kangaroobie deposit
Just a friendly reminder that a $50 deposit for your child to attend camp is due to be paid by Tuesday 16th April.
While camp will be held in Term Three, it is necessary for us to have an indication of numbers attending to be able to plan accordingly. Further information will be available shortly after this time as to the final cost and dates each group will attend the camp.
Have a fabulous and safe Easter break and we look forward to seeing everyone back, ready to learn on Monday 15th April.
