World's Greatest Shave

Chopping and shaving in the name of charity

City workers starting their day in William St this morning may have noticed that something big was happening at St George's.

Many students arrived wearing all manner of wigs and crazy hairstyles. And, a short time ago, some left for the weekend with a completely new look - having volunteered to shave their head or cut their long hair in our annual fund-raising event, World's Greatest Shave.

To the sounds of the official World's Greatest Shave playlist, and in front of a packed audience on Level 4, some 13 students of all ages, and three staff members, donned a cape and gave generously to raise awareness of blood cancer and funds for the Leukemia Foundation of WA. The chief choppers were Ms Hyland, Miss McGaw and Year 11 student Aramis, who is currently doing work experience at a barber's.

Head of Pastoral Care - Student Wellbeing, Mr Thompson, was delighted to reveal that by the time the first pair of clippers came out, our school had exceeded our $11,000 target (set after the success of last year), attracting $12,000 in online donations. Crazy Hair Day also added to the pool, through participants' gold coin donations.

This meant that Mr Dempers' moustache was no more. Gone too was Miss Hewitt's waist-length locks and Mr Hanssen's mop of hair. Our students were brave and thrilled to shave their heads and lose their length for such a good cause. Well done to all the students involved and to Community Service Captain Audrey and the Guild for their pre-event organisation. And, thanks so much to each person who donated or sponsored a student.
