House Spirit is where the heart is

Teamwork, participation and community are all essential elements of our House system here at St George’s Anglican Grammar School.

Belonging to one of our three houses of Mandela, Lincoln and Gandhi plays a significant role in the life of the school and helps us to successfully build school spirit and unity. Through a range of friendly competitions, daily house tokens, charity days and major Interhouse events, students are strongly encouraged to support and cheer for their respective Houses throughout the school year, and this in itself assists in developing cross year group collegiality, collaboration, and friendships making our House system the very heart of the school.

Crucial to our House competitions is ‘House Week’ which commenced last year as an idea developed by our Heads of House. This now excitedly takes place every Week 7 of term with a ‘can do’ attitude amongst all members of each of our three Houses. House Week at its very essence fosters a sense of togetherness amongst the students, supports the development of healthy competition between each of the Houses and allows every member of the House to play their part in achieving the acclaimed title of ‘Best House’. It really could be renamed ‘Spirit Week’ as this is what it evokes within the school.

Mr Dempers, Mr Lim and Miss Perejmibida have all worked tirelessly to create a vibrant and spirited atmosphere throughout the school. We have seen students involved in Interhouse Volleyball on the rooftop, Geo Guess on Level 3 and a Paper Throwing Tournament in the Fitness Centre. Achievement, excellence, and inclusion have all been the hallmarks of this week’s competitions and each student involved has been able to contribute valuable House points to the highly sought after House Cup awarded annually at Presentation Night.

House Week is all about being involved and it has most definitely been a wonderfully fun and upbeat week across the range of competitions and healthy rivalry that has been showcased between Gandhi House, Mandela House, and Lincoln House.

There was enormous pride amongst the student body participating in the various House-based activities – the sense of identity and camaraderie was certainly something to be celebrated this week in all three of the fun activities offered. As the competitions come to their conclusion and the points are tallied, may the best House win!

To finish the excitement of the week, we involved ourselves as a whole school once again in the World’s Greatest Shave and Crazy Hair Day. The World’s Greatest Shave was started in 1988 and has since become one of Australia’s biggest and most well-known fundraisers. As a school, we have been involved for the last four years with many courageous staff and students taking part in the ponytail chop or complete head shave for lots of different reasons. Some have a personal connection to blood cancer, whilst others simple want to raise money for a good cause and contribute to the collective aims of the whole school community.

The World’s Greatest Shave is an event managed by our Year 12 Student Leaders and raises funds to support people experiencing blood cancers as well as to help fund research into a cure. A few hours before the event today, we surpassed our $11,000 target. If you would still like to donate, please continue to visit the link below to make your donation over the course of the weekend.

As we edge closer towards the end of Term One, we look forward to coming together for the annual whole school Gandhi House Charity Day Colour Run – a fun-filled activity to conclude Term One 2024.

Warmest wishes,
