Chicks On The Loose: UCS Library Easter Chicken Hunt Delights Students

The UCS Library was bustling with excitement last week as 28 mischievous baby chickens made their escape, just in time for the Easter festivities! The much-anticipated Easter Chicken Hunt brought together students from across the school, each eager to locate the adorable chicks hidden among shelves, study nooks, and reading corners.

Students roamed the library, beaming with anticipation as they scanned bookshelves and comfy couches for the elusive chicks. Squeals of delight echoed through the stacks each time a little chicken was discovered, turning the library into a lively hub of laughter and teamwork. Many participants shared the thrill of finding these crafty creatures and compared their discoveries in friendly competition.

Library staff were thrilled to witness such enthusiastic engagement and joy. Events like the Easter Chicken Hunt encourage curiosity, community spirit, and a love for learning—while also providing plenty of seasonal fun!

Congratulations to all the diligent chicken trackers. The UCS Library extends thanks to everyone who participated, making this Easter event a memorable highlight for the whole school. We can’t wait to see what surprises next year’s hunt will bring!

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students have had a wonderful and busy start to Term 2! We are excited to share all the fantastic learning taking place in our classroom.

In Literacy, students have made great progress with their letter sounds and are now beginning to read and make simple words. During our Literacy Rotations, the children have started reading books and are now bringing them home to share their reading with their families—a wonderful way to foster a love of reading. Please remember to return all home reading folders every Friday so they can be changed and new readers sent home.

In Geography, we have been exploring the theme of ‘Places’. Kindergarten has enjoyed discussing places they know such as their homes, school, and local airport. We have also looked at big places like shopping centres as well as small places such as tents and kennels. Our young learners are building their understanding of the world around them.

Creative and Practical Arts this term focuses on Drama. As part of our drama unit, “Play building and role play,” students have been researching the beach and exploring the activities and sights you might experience there. Through play building and role play, students are developing their dramatic skills and expressing their ideas by creating and performing beach-themed scenarios.

In Mathematics, Kindergarten has been learning about 2D shapes and their properties. We have also begun exploring the concept of halves and practising how to divide different objects into two equal parts. We had lots of fun halving fairy bread and lamingtons.

It has been an exciting start to the term, and we look forward to seeing our Kindergarten students continue to grow and learn in the coming weeks!

Stage 3

Last term we had the opportunity to send selected Stage 3 students to the Inquiring Minds Camp that was held at Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre.  Students selected an area of interest and spent 2 days learning about it with support from experts in the subject. It was a fantastic learning experience, and students had a fantastic time learning about robots, Art, insects and creative world design.

"We made robots that we could control with controllers and programed them computers. We had to build a track and program our robot to go around it as fast as it could. At night we got to play games like tribes and territories in the bush. They gave us food based on our subjects" Matilda.

"When learning about insects we got to eat mealworms" Christian

"At Thalgarrah we had so much fun!!! In the art subject we got to make really cool things, we carved through plasticine. Each morning tea and afternoon tea was inspired by our group." Aubrey

"At Thalgarrah we all had a subject that we got to learn about and for afternoon tea the food we had was inspired by what we were investigating. We learnt a lot and had heaps of fun with kids from other schools." Evie

Stage 2 Music

This term, Stage 2 students are enjoying an exciting musical journey as they learn to play the keyboard with Ms Matsui in Music classes. So far, students have enthusiastically played familiar tunes like "Hot Cross Buns" and are now working on "7 Years" by Lukas Graham.

The students have thoroughly enjoyed each lesson and are eager to continue developing their keyboard skills throughout the term. It’s awesome to see everyone getting into music and building their confidence—with plenty of fun along the way!

Touch Football At School

Last Friday, Stage 2 students had a fun and action-packed session with Dan McKenzie from NSW Touch Football. Dan led the students through a range of different skills using lots of fun games.

The session was really engaging and gave students of all skill levels the chance to improve their touch football skills. Everyone had a great time learning new moves and trying out what they’d been taught.

It was a fantastic way for the kids to stay active and enjoy some friendly competition!
