PRIMARY (F-6)

School Leaders Report - Gary
It's hard to believe we have reached Week 10 already! As we approached the end of term, it has a busy and meaningful time in our school community as we come together to celebrate Easter. This Thursday, students are invited to wear a cap and donate a gold coin, with all proceeds supporting Caritas.
Our Easter Egg Raffle is also underway, with tickets available from Reception. We would greatly appreciate any donations of Easter eggs, particularly from families in Charles House who are able to contribute. ANZAC badges are also on sale at Reception for $2, and we thank you for your continued generosity and support.
Also on Thursday, students will participate in Stations of the Cross, a prayerful and reflective experience that invites us to walk alongside Jesus on his journey to the cross. This is a special opportunity for our community to gather in prayer and reflection as we prepare our hearts for Holy Week.
Primary Assembly
A huge thank you to our parents/carers for attending our final assembly for Term 1 on Monday last week. We loved sharing our learning, singing and coming together in prayer.
Class Reports
Foundation
What a wonderful term of growth and independence the Foundation students have shown. They have had a terrific start to the year, and Cindy and Glenice are very happy with their progress and positive attitude.
Literacy
Early writing lessons focus primarily on oral language skills. The children have been learning how to describe what we look like and say adjectives in sentences.
Numeracy
The Foundation students have finished the term learning how to describe the position and location of themselves and objects in relation to other people and objects. We have been focussing on words like: beside, on top, under, next to, in front of, behind.
Humanities
The Foundation students are learning to describe and compare celebrations and say how two celebrations are the same or different. They can tell what happens first, next and last in a birthday celebration.
Year 1
Thank you to all our lovely Year 1 families who attended Learning Conversations last week. It was lovely meeting some of you for the first time and being able to share your child’s learning with you.
Our students have spent the past fortnight finishing our Term 1 units and revising what we have learnt so far.
In Literacy, we have been revising the sounds and spellings for the digraphs (two letters making one sound - sh, ch, ck, wh, th, oo & ng).
In Maths, students have been learning how to order two and three digit numbers from largest to smallest by comparing the value of digits in each place value column.
In Religious Education, students have continued to learn about the significance of Lent and Easter. We explored the key days in Holy Week and the associated Lenten symbols.
In Humanities, we have begun our second unit, How Places Change. We have looked at how places change due to natural and human forces. Students especially enjoyed viewing old photos of well-known Shepparton streets and identifying how infrastructure in our town has changed over time.
The Year 1 team wishes all St Anne’s College families a relaxing and safe Easter break. See you next term!
Year 2
Over the past two weeks the Year 2 classes have been finalising several learning units and completing assessment tasks. It was very pleasing to see the growth that has taken place this term.
In Religious Education we studied the events of Holy Week concluding at Easter when we celebrate that Jesus is always with us and reflect on how we can make the world kinder by bringing hope, peace, and joy to others.
Our reading program has focused on developing comprehension skills by making predictions to help students connect with texts and encourage them to continue reading. There has also been a focus on attending to punctuation to support pace and fluency.
In Mathematics, addition and subtraction have been our main focus. Families who would like to do additional practice at home can support their child by revising number bonds to 10 and 20, as well as building quick recall of simple addition facts such as 7 + 2 and 9 + 6, and 12+3.
We hope you have a safe and relaxing holiday break and that the children return well rested and ready for learning next term.
Year 3
Throughout the term our Year 3 students explored the concept of communities in Humanities, developing an understanding of roles, responsibilities, and what helps a community function effectively.
As part of their learning, students enjoyed a visit from the Bunnings Warehouse Shepparton team who shared insights into their important role within the community.
A special thank you to Sarah and Mon for generously sharing their time and knowledge with our students.
This was followed by a hands-on creative activity where students designed their own place within a community, showcasing their ideas, creativity and understanding of how communities work.
Year 4
Literacy: In Literacy, we have begun writing our own narratives based on our class novel, Leo and Ralph. Students are learning how to create engaging introductions by clearly introducing their characters and setting. We have also been focusing on including dialogue in our writing to help bring characters to life and make our stories more interesting for the reader. It has been wonderful to see students experimenting with their ideas and developing their storytelling skills.
Humanities: In Humanities, we have begun our unit on Vikings. Students have been learning about how Vikings lived and exploring the different roles of men, women, and children in Viking society. We discovered that Viking children did not attend school like we do today, as they were expected to help with jobs such as farming and household tasks.
We have also compared modern ships with Viking longboats, discussing their design and how they were used for travel and raiding. Students have shown great interest in learning about how Vikings explored new lands and carried out raids.
We have had a wonderful term of learning and are looking forward to returning to school refreshed and ready for Term 2.
Year 5
The Year 5 students have been working on some short assessment tasks in Religious Education and Connections. By creating a drawn artwork and 150 word written response in RE, students have been considering the symbolism of ‘light’ and ‘darkness’, how this relates to their own experiences and to the life of Jesus.
In Connections, students have been learning about how to keep ourselves and those around us safe in different environments and circumstances. This week, we are finishing the unit by holding a class debate where some students have written speeches to present arguing their point of view, while others have written a checklist to assist them as debating adjudicators and give feedback to the presenters.
It’s been wonderful to see all of our Year 5 students grow in their learning this term and meld together as a collaborative learning team. We wish all our families a Happy Easter and a safe holiday!
Year 6
The Year 6 students have had a fantastic week of learning as we wrapped up a busy and productive term. It has been great to see the effort and focus students have maintained, and they should be proud of all they have achieved across the term.
In Literacy we finished our class novel The Silver Donkey and continued building our spelling skills through Spellex, with a focus on segmenting larger words and applying suffix rules.
In Mathematics, students consolidated their learning by revisiting key concepts from the term, including data collection, factors, and multiplication facts.
In Connections, students created presentations based on their research into road rules and safety, demonstrating both creativity and understanding.
In Religion, we explored the key events leading up to Easter, helping students develop a deeper understanding of this important time. It has been a wonderful first term, and I look forward to seeing the students continue to grow and thrive after a well-deserved break.
Reminders:
Annual General Permission
If you haven't already done so, please ensure you have completed the Annual General Permission on SIMON via the Connect Field. It is imperative this is completed in order for your student/s to attend important excursions throughout the school year.
Parents/carers are reminded there is a very important process to follow if your student must leave the college at any time throughout school hours. Please ensure you follow these steps:
Parents/carers MUST provide a note to the front office, at the start of the school day, stating the following:
- Student Name
- Date of leave required
- The time the student must present to reception to take their leave
- If they will return to the college the same day, and if so what time they will return
- The reason for the leave being requested
- The parent/carer’s name and signature
Please note, students will only be permitted to be collected by their parent/carer unexpectedly and without a note if it is an emergency.
We remind all that the college opens at 8:30am. This enables educators time to prepare for their day ahead. We appreciate your support in helping our educators be successful. Yard duty staff begin at 8:30am to monitor play spaces before the school day begins at 8:55am.
