Dear Collingwood College Community,

I would like to sincerely thank our school community for their ongoing support.

It has been a big term of teaching and learning. I have had the pleasure of seeing students actively engaged, challenged, and motivated to learn. Being located on the second floor with students, I especially get to see this. This engagement has been further evident in Learning Walks I have recently completed where I have been able to see our teachers and students partake in entry routines to focus attention and support students’ readiness to learn.

In particular, I have been impressed by the way our students continue to embody important learner attributes such as risk-taking and thinking, in addition to finding balance through interschool sport and other outlets like the production.

I wish our Year 9 and 10 students the very best for their examinations. Providing students with opportunities to think, write and problem solve under test conditions is important in building confidence, perseverance and stamina. A reminder for all families is the importance of a study routine, and healthy sleep/eating habits to support their children at this time.

Examinations

Year 10 - Week 8

Year 9 - Week 9

Year 10 students will also undertake Work Experience proceeding exams which is another exciting opportunity to discover future work and career-related aspirations.  I look forward to hearing about their experiences.

Authorised IB World School for the Middle Years Programme (MYP)

This term we achieved a significant milestone in our IB journey in becoming officially authorised to deliver the IB Middle Years Programme.  This outcome is the collective effort and commitment of three and a half years of dedicated work by our school community - teachers, parents, students and School Council members. In this time teachers have undertaken certified professional learning, created a conceptual curriculum and established teaching and learning practices and routines that support structured inquiry learning.

As MYP Coordinator, I am incredibly proud of all involved, and excited by what this means for our school community.  We will continue to build on the programme to create learning opportunities for our students that encourage them to be curious and knowledgeable  learners who contribute to their local and global communities.

MYP Showcase (not to be missed 🙂)

Our end of semester showcase will take place Week 9 this term.  This is an opportunity for families to visit the school with their child to undertake a gallery walk of student achievement and creativity.  Classrooms will be set up with student work and there will be performances and presentations.

With our recent authorisation success, it would be great to have as many families attend as possible to celebrate student achievement at our school.  Finger food, cake and drinks provided!

Peace Pole Project

The Rotary Club of Collingwood works hard to support local community projects within the city of Yarra.  Their vision aligns closely with our school ethos in inspiring young people to contribute to their local and global community by taking actions to make a difference. Our college has received support from the Rotary Club of Collingwood for a number of years.

President of Rotary Club Collingwood Paul Horton, recently organised for Peace Poles to be installed in the Hoddle Street entrance of the school. Our School Council student representative Gus Casey helped with the process of putting them in. These Peace Poles represent the languages of our student cohort and are dedicated to promoting peace and fostering a culture of harmony and belonging.  There are approximately 3000,000 Peace Poles in close to 200 countries around the world. Please see here for additional information on the initiative.

Great efforts have been made to capture the languages of our student cohort and we can add more languages to the existing poles!  We now have an opportunity to develop the area with student involvement to express messages of peace and hope.  It could also inspire creative work through art and poetry, and conversations around what peace means.     Watch this space!

Year 10 Mathematics

Another Rotary support to highlight is the generous funding of 15 CAS calculators for our Year 10 Mathematics classes.  These calculators are essential tools for modern mathematics, particularly as our students transition into senior secondary education.

The ti-Nspire CAS allows students to explore complex algebraic concepts, visualise functions, and solve intricate problems that would otherwise be inaccessible. This has removed a significant financial burden for many families. This gift is an investment in their academic confidence and their future success in STEM fields. Thank you for your kindness and for empowering our students with the tools they need to excel. (Swati Singh - Mathematics Learning Area Leader)

Reconciliation Week

Gallery Image

The theme for National Reconciliation Week this year is All In, a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

Staff and students have engaged in different activities to mark the week and to highlight past achievements and future opportunities for achieving reconciliation. We have also carefully considered the significance of the dates that commemorate two monumental milestones in Australia's reconciliation journey - The 1967 Referendum (May 27)  and the Highcourt Mabo Landmark decision (June 3).

Please come and see our display at the school (ground floor staircase - front office side) where our community has considered the groups and teams that they belong to, the values that connect them and the role they can play in advancing reconciliation.  You are also invited to complete a circle with a word, action or statement for a reconciled Australia and add it to the wall.

We understand that we teach and learn on the lands of the Wurunjeri people of the Kulin Nation and we all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation.  We stand committed  to building relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.

Kind regards,

Sports

Athletics Day

This year we had our first-ever Collingwood-Fitzroy-Wurun athletics day, and it was a huge success. Under blue skies, students ran, jumped, threw, pulled (tug of war novelty event), and balanced eggs while walking as fast as they could. Gold house came out winner for the day, but students from all three campuses did themselves proud competing in competitive and novelty events, and supporting their classmates. Congrats to everyone who got involved, and a big thank you to staff for incredible cross-campus cooperation.

The winners from each event qualified for divisional athletics – the first time Collingwood has sent athletes to this in years! Congratulations to the following students:

Girls Badminton

Great work to our two teams of badminton girls who competed in the Intermediate Girls Badminton competition at Glenroy College last week. Our A team came close second, and every girl did her best and had a great day. First real competition for some of these players: well done!

 Girls IB soccer

Our intermediate girls soccer team had a strong showing at the Intermediate Girls Soccer comp at Rupert Wallace Reserve in week 3. It was incredible to see the team work and cooperation between a number of different friendship groups and experience levels. Everyone really came together, gave their all in warm conditions, and – as they put it – “did way better than expected and didn’t lose every game!”

Head Start Program

Get a Head Start with a School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs)

Did you know that students enrolled in VCE can do an apprenticeship or traineeship and get credit toward their senior studies? It’s a great way to get into a career while completing Year 12. SBATs earn a wage, receive specialised training and complete their schooling all at the same time. The Head Start program is here to help.

The Learner Profile

Gallery Image

Below are a range of ways that you can promote the Learner Profile attributes at home within the family.

A simple approach is to model and recognise. Enjoy 🙂

                                                               The Learner Profile

InquirersWe nurture our curiosity. We know how to learn independently and with others.  We learn with enthusiasm and value a love of life-long learning.
  • Encourage your child’s interests by visiting places such as the Local/State Library, Museum, NGV…
  • Model being an inquirer: admit when you don’t know the answers to a problem or a question and seek out answers with your child
  • Use the internet as a tool for inquiry and have conversations around reputable sites
  • Discuss the role of inquiry in your personal and professional life
Open-MindedWe critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, and those of other people.  We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.
  • Encourage your child to try new things - food, games, places, activities…
  • Expose your child to different festivals, celebrations and traditions
  • Encourage your child to listen for understanding
  • Discuss issues and consider opposing points of view and reasons
ThinkersWe use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems.  We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.
  • Encourage your child to independently think of different solutions to problems
  • Pose different real-life problems/questions to your child
  • Ask your child questions when they are working on a problem:
  • Do you have any ideas about how you will begin?
  • Tell me about your thinking
  • How could you do it differently?
  • What do you notice and wonder?
Caring We show empathy, compassion and respect.  We act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.
  • Role-model the kind of behaviour you want to see in your child: helping others without being asked, being an active listener, acting in ways to show that you care…
  • Reflect on the actions of characters in texts (prin/audio/film)  Were they kind or caring?
  • Recognise this quality in people’s actions
KnowledgeableWe develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines.  We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global decisions.
  • Encourage your child to make self/text/world connections with what they read/view.  Include first language books/films.
  • Ask your child what they are learning at school and engage in conversations about it: Why do you think that is an important thing to know about?
  • Encourage your child to become familiar with current local/national/global events and issues
PrincipledWe act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.
  • Discuss the importance of honesty/truth
  • Talk about global issues and fairness/social justice
  • Encourage your child to engage in team and independent sports/games
  • Discuss the idea of norms
  • Talk about the importance of effort over winning and being a gracious loser
BalancedWe understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives - intellectual, physical and emotional - to achieve well-being for ourselves and others.  We recognise our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.
  • Encourage your child to participate in a wide variety of structured activities as a balance between school and leisure
  • Discuss what you are eating with your child - is it a balanced diet?
  • Emphasise that boredom is okay too - good for us!
  • Put devices away
  • Encourage your child to take timeout and go for a walk, engage with nature or read a book (Brain Breaks)
CommunicatorsWe express ourselves confidently and creatively in different languages.  We collaborate effectively, actively listening to the perspectives of other individuals or groups.
  • Encourage your child to stay in contact with relatives in other parts of Australia or different countries
  • Encourage your child to explain their thinking orally or by drawing a picture
  • Talk about what effective communication can look/sound/feel like
  • Have family dinner-table conversations
  • Play a game that requires a specific communication skill.  e.g. Charades
ReflectiveWe thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experiences.  We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.
  • Review your child’s report with them; talk about successes and opportunities for improvement
  • Reflect on sport outcomes
  • Talk about recent events/actions and what you have learned, or adjustments you would make
  • Set goals with your child
  • Talk about a growth mindset
Risk-takersWe approach uncertaining with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change. We see making mistakes as a natural part of the learning process.
  • Encourage your child to attempt new things and then reflect on it - whether they liked it and how it made them feel
  • Discuss the difference between being a risk-taker and dangerous behaviour
  • Recognise the learning gains that result from risk-taking and making mistakes
  • Talk about comfort zones and the benefits of goal-setting
  • Share your own growth stories from taking risks
