What is SWPBS and why it matters

At Mount Carmel College, we are proud to implement School-Wide Positive Behavioural Interventions and supports (SWPBS). SWPBS is a proactive approach to teaching and reinforcing positive behaviour so that every student can thrive academically and socially. Rather than waiting for problems to occur, SWPBS focuses on prevention, clear expectations and consistent support.

Our school community is guided by four pillars: Respect, Resilience, Compassion and Contribute. These pillars shape our daily expectations and help students understand how to be respectful, be responsible and be safe in every setting, classrooms, assemblies, playgrounds and beyond.

Through SWPBS, we explicitly teach behaviour just like we teach reading or writing. Students learn what respect looks like in the classroom, how resilience helps them preserve through challenges, how compassion strengthens friendships, and how contributing positively impacts our entire school community.

Positive reinforcement is a key part of SWPBS. When students demonstrate our pillars in action, they are recognised through praise, acknowledgements and school wide celebrations. This encouragement strengthens positive choices and builds confidence. When students feel valued and supported, they are more likely to repeat those behaviours.

A proactive approach is often more effective than responding after challenges arise. By clearly teaching expectations and recognising student success, we help prevent misunderstandings and reduce discipline concerns before they occur. Together, with families and staff working in partnership, we continue to foster a safe and supportive environment where every student has the opportunity to grow, lead, and succeed.
