Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

Welcome to Week 8! The term is moving quickly and the students continue to show great commitment to their learning. It has been wonderful to see their confidence growing across different areas of the curriculum. We look forward to continuing our learning together over the next few weeks.

Friendly Reminder:  Please ensure your child is in the correct school uniform and has their name on items that come off and on during the day. This includes jumpers and jackets. We have a lot of lost property at school to check if needed.

Health Reminder: To help keep all of our students and staff healthy, we kindly ask that children who are unwell remain at home to rest and recover. If your child has vomited or had diarrhoea, please ensure they stay home for at least 24 hours after the last episode before returning to school. This helps prevent the spread of illness within our community. Thank you for your support in keeping everyone safe and well.

If your child has any sort of medical condition please ensure that you have updated the school and the class teacher.

This week we learnt about:

Religious Education: In Religious Education, we are practising for our upcoming Mass and preparing to participate respectfully and confidently. We are also learning about Harmony Day, which celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and promotes the message that everyone belongs. Students are exploring the importance of inclusion, respect and kindness, and how we can celebrate and learn from each other’s differences.

Mathematics: In Maths, we are learning to add and subtract numbers using a range of strategies. Students are practising different ways to solve problems and explain their thinking. We are encouraging students to choose strategies that work best for them, such as partitioning numbers, counting on and back, and using number lines. Developing these strategies helps students build confidence and flexibility when solving mathematical problems.

Structured Literacy:  In Literacy, we have been looking at a book called 'Mirror', which has pictures only. Students are comparing the two different stories and looking closely at the images to understand the characters, settings and ways of life. This has inspired students to think about similarities and differences between communities, and to create their own writing using detailed descriptions and thoughtful ideas.

Auslan: In Auslan we are looking at the following signs for the week:

Social & Emotional Learning: In Social and Emotional Learning, students are learning about respect from Aboriginal perspectives. They are exploring what it means to show respect for themselves, for others and for Country. Through discussions and activities, students are developing an understanding of how respectful actions help build strong, caring and connected communities.

Integrated Studies:

In Integrated Studies, we are continuing our learning about Australia, with a focus on our capital city, Canberra. Students are exploring its key features and why it is important to our country. We are also comparing the states of Victoria and Northern Territory, looking at their locations, climates and unique characteristics.

How you can support at home:

Families play an important role in supporting learning at school, and there are many simple ways you can help at home.

  • Ask your child to tell you about the book we read this week. You can read the book together
  • Ask your child to tell you what they learnt about adding and subtracting.
  • Read with your child and ask them questions about the book
  • Practise handwriting, using upper case and lower case correctly

These small, regular conversations help build confidence and reinforce learning in a meaningful way.
