Mathematics in Action
It has been a busy and engaging time in Mathematics across the school, with students actively involved in a range of dynamic and purposeful learning experiences.
Year 9 has brought energy and enthusiasm into the classroom through activities such as maths scavenger hunts and relay challenges. These lessons were carefully structured using chunking of learning, where concepts were broken into manageable steps to support understanding.
Year 10 Standard students have taken a hands-on approach to Mathematics by creating models of three-dimensional solids. This practical task supported their understanding of surface area and allowed students to visualise key concepts. The lessons followed a Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model, beginning with explicit teacher instruction, moving to guided practice, and culminating in independent application through model creation.
Year 10 Advanced students have been expanding their knowledge of the number system through their study of irrational numbers. As part of this learning, they applied their creativity by constructing surds using the Spiral of Theodorus.
Throughout these activities, teachers incorporated a range of Checking for Understanding strategies—such as hinge questions, the traffic light system, and mini whiteboards to quickly gauge student progress and adjust instruction in real time.
It has been wonderful to see students so engaged, collaborative, and willing to challenge themselves in Mathematics. These approaches continue to build confidence, deepen understanding, and foster a positive learning environment.
A quick reminder that our Mathematics Workshop runs every Tuesday at lunchtime in N201. This is a valuable opportunity for students to receive additional support with homework and to strengthen their understanding of concepts covered in class. All students are encouraged to attend.
