International Student Update

The Bayside Youth Summit
On Thursday the 14th of May, more than 100 secondary school student leaders attended the Bayside Summit at Beaumaris Secondary college. The event included a workshop delivered by Youth Leadership Academy Australia to further develop their leadership skills, raise their voices on emerging community issues and influence real change within their communities.
Our international students Dily and Evelyn would like to share their experience:
Dily: It is a great opportunity to participate in the Bayside Youth Summit at Beaumaris Secondary College. It was a great chance for me to interact with other student leaders from different schools. I was able to discuss what it means to be a leader and work as a team to find solutions for the relevant issues that our communities currently face. It was a really fun event where I was able to talk to new people and make more connections. I also liked the food at the event; both the morning tea and lunch were really good.
Evelyn: Attending the Bayside Summit was such a meaningful experience for me. I got to meet lots of student leaders from different schools, and it was really interesting to hear everyone’s ideas and experiences. One of my favourite parts was working with my group on a mental health activity and presenting it in front of everyone together. The day helped me realise that leadership is not just about giving opinions, but also about listening, understanding different perspectives, and working as a team to find solutions.
ES Appreciation Day
Last Saturday was Education Support Staff Appreciation Day, a special occasion to recognize the people who help keep our schools welcoming, organized, safe, and supportive. A big thank you to our ILC students, guided by Ms. Podesser, for organizing and creating such thoughtful and valuable gifts for the staff. Your kindness and appreciation made the day even more meaningful.
Pre-service teacher feedback
This term, Mordialloc College welcomed and supported placements for over 20 pre-service teachers. Among them, two teachers attended the EAL class. Here is a reflection on their experience:
Dayane: Through this placement experience, especially working with Learning Centre and EAL students, I developed a deeper understanding of the challenges students face when learning English in a new language environment. I realised that effective language learning requires not only explicit grammar instruction, but also meaningful exposure and authentic communication opportunities. Because I have experienced learning English as an additional language myself, I felt able to give students more practical and targeted advice. This experience reinforced the importance of scaffolding, confidence-building, and creating opportunities for students to actively use language in real contexts.
Kate : It has been a great pleasure to be able to complete my placement at Mordialloc College. The warm welcome from staff and students made me feel valued from day one. My mentor Brigitte Podesser‘s guidance and patience helped me grow in confidence and develop my teaching practice. Observing and leading lessons gave me a real classroom insight I could never gain from textbooks alone. This placement has shaped me into a more reflective and passionate educator. Thank you for inviting me in the journey of exploring education.
IDAHOBIT Day
Organised by the Community and Wellbeing Committee and Kingston Youth Service, the IDAHOBIT Day event was held on Tuesday, 18 May, in front of the HUB. Many of our students enthusiastically participated in the activities, including face painting and guessing the number of lollies in the jar. The event provided a fun and inclusive opportunity for students to come together, celebrate diversity, and promote respect within our school community.
