Primary Assemblies Focus: Compassion in Action

Over the past two weeks in our Primary Monday Assemblies, we have been exploring the important value of compassion—what it looks like, why it matters, and how each one of us can live it out in our school community.

In our first week, we started our thinking in one of Jesus’ well‑known teachings: the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Together, we reflected on how compassion is choosing to notice when someone needs help, caring enough to stop, and taking action to make a difference. We discussed practical and meaningful ways we can show compassion at DCS: inviting someone to play, offering help when a friend is upset, including others, speaking kindly, and standing up for those who feel alone.

Last week, we continued our focus by looking at what compassion looks like in real life at DCS. We also shared the statement "Compassion is caring enough to do something about someone else's need". Students were invited to share examples of times when other students had shown compassion to them. These were written on slips of paper and shared with classes and Mr Evans, giving us a wonderful window into the kindness happening every day across our playgrounds and classrooms.

Some of the encouraging examples students submitted included:

This person "came up to me when I was on the Buddy Bench and asked, do you want to play with me?"
This person "helped a boy at recess when he was sad. She was willing to play with him in the shade even though she had a hat."
This person "is always looking out for people who are sad or have no one to play with. They show Jesus in everything they do".

Each slip of paper was a reminder that compassion isn’t just an idea we talk about—our Primary students are living it out in genuine and thoughtful ways.

As we continue through the term, we encourage families to keep talking about compassion at home: What does it look like? How can we notice others? How can we take action? Small moments of kindness shape who we are becoming, and together we can keep building a community marked by love, care, and compassion for one another.

We are looking forward to our 2026 Canberra Excursion, which promises to be a wonderful learning experience for our students. Planning is well underway, and we are excited to start sharing details with you.

We warmly invite our Year 6 families to join us at our Parent Information Session on Wednesday 8th April at 3:30pm in the JILOA Centre. This will be a great chance to hear more about the camp and have any general questions answered. If you are unable to make it, all the information will be sent home afterwards.

As we prepare, we invite you to join us in praying for all involved, that this experience will be memorable, enriching, and full of growth for our students. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Tom Evans (tom.evans@dcs.tas.edu.au) or Corina Barnard (corina.barnard@dcs.tas.edu.au).
