Wholehearted: The Cross Changes Everything

There is a moment in the Easter story that quietly changes everything. Not because it is loud or triumphant, but because it is costly, sacrificial, and deeply personal. The cross.

In a world that often teaches us to hold back, protect ourselves, and give only what feels comfortable, Easter reveals a Saviour who gave everything. Jesus did not love halfway. He did not serve conditionally. He gave Himself wholeheartedly. Yet, he too felt the anxiety that came with such heaviness (Matthew 26:39).

The Bible reminds us in Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Not when we had it all together. Not when we earned it. Not when we were at our best. Right in the middle of our brokenness, our mistakes, and our need, Jesus chose the cross.

Isaiah 53:5 declares, “He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”

This is the heart of Easter. Jesus took our place. He carried what we could not carry. He made a way where there was no way.

The cross is not simply a historical event. It is the greatest demonstration of love the world has ever known. It tells us that we are fully known and still fully loved. It tells us that sin does not define us, shame does not own us, and death does not defeat us.

As Billy Graham once said, “God proved His love on the cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the world, ‘I love you.’”

This is why Easter matters. This is why the cross is so significant. Because Jesus gave His life so that we could find life. And here is the invitation for us as a community living out our theme of Wholehearted. To not respond to that kind of love with a half-hearted faith. To not keep Jesus on the edges of our lives.

But to know Him, trust Him, and follow Him with all our heart, soul, and mind.

Jesus Himself calls us in Matthew 22:37, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Wholehearted living begins when we understand who He is and what He has done. When we truly grasp the love of Jesus, it changes everything.

We begin to love more deeply.

We forgive more freely.

We serve more willingly.

We live with hope, even in uncertain times.

And the story does not end at the cross.

The empty tomb declares victory.

As it says in Matthew 28:6, “He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.”

Tim Keller once wrote, “If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that He said. If He didn’t rise, then why worry about any of what He said.”

Easter calls us to consider the truth and respond personally. This Easter is more than a moment on the calendar. It is an invitation. An invitation to know Jesus, to receive His love, and to live wholeheartedly for Him.

You are warmly invited to join us this Easter as we gather with the Devonport combined churches at paranaple Convention Centre, or at a local church service across the weekend. Come and experience the hope, the truth, and the life that is found in Jesus.

This Easter, may we not just observe the story. May we step into it. Wholeheartedly.
