Update from our Careers Adviser

Congratulations to the 18 students who completed their white card on Thursday 19 March.  Now they can work on a construction site and have been informed and tested on work, health and safety.  This lasts indefinitely, however, if they have not worked on a construction site for a prolonged period, the employer could insist on a top up course which could be completed online.  If you missed out on the white card and would like to do it this year, there will be another opportunity in Term 3.

There have been a number of students who have taken advantage of work experience in the local area.  Work experience usually lasts one week for similar hours to a school day each day.  It can lead to work or the student can see whether they would pursue in that particular career choice.

In the Career Lessons in Year 10 students have completed resumes or continually improving them.  They have created a USI number (Unique Student Identifier Number) which is required for students who wish to enrol into TAFE, University or particular jobs. Once you obtain your USI, you keep it for life.  We have also applied for tax file numbers online.  Students then go to their local post office with their completed tax file form, and 100 points of ID.  Once submitted, it usually takes around two and a half weeks to be sent to you.

Some Year 12 students attended the University of Wollongong Discovery Day at the Wollongong campus.  They experienced four lectures of their choice.  This gave them a taster experience of what university life is like. If your student is in Year 11, they should consider attending this in February, 2027.

Year 12 students should be getting ready to apply for early entry into universities.  University of Wollongong applications commence in June while the Western Sydney University True Rewards early entry applications open in late April.  UAC also opens in early April.  This is the University Admissions Centre.  This way students can apply for a number of university courses from various campuses.  The cost of UAC is around $80.  Every Year 12 student receives a PIN Number in early April.  They have until late September to pay.  After September, the cost increases to around $200.

Many students commenced TVET (TAFE Vocational Education and Training) in mid February or continued from last year.  Courses included Early Childhood, Electrotechnology, Fitness, Real Estate, ICT to name a few.  We had 11 students  from Year 11 commence TVET in 2026.

‘Start Your Future’ Courses commence next term from Week 2.  We have had several students apply for courses.  Courses include Barbering, Hairdressing, Automotive, Early Childhood, Beauty & Make Up to name a few.  Students will find out in late March if they have been accepted.  Courses are free.  They last for 8 weeks one day a week from 9am to 3pm.  Most courses are at either Campbelltown or Liverpool TAFE.

It has been a busy start to 2026.  Next term will also be busy with two career expos occurring in June.  Years 10 to 12 can attend the Minto Expo (in early June) and Year 12 and some Year11 students can attend the Homebush Expo in late June. There will be first aid course later this year. Also Year 10 will be having an Interview Day in early Term 4.
