Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to our talented athletes on securing 1st place in the A Grade Catholic Schools Athletics Carnival Years 7-12, an outstanding achievement!

We are incredibly proud of the team. Not only did they deliver exceptional performances across track and field events, but they also represented the College with distinction. The Loreto spirit was evident in their encouragement of teammates, their sportsmanship in congratulating other schools, and their willingness to assist officials throughout the day.

A special mention to Kaysii (Year 12), who qualified for the 100m Champion Race and finished among the top four athletes at the event. Congratulations as well to our 16+ athletes, who delivered a fantastic performance in winning both their relay and age group shield. To top it off, they recently learned they set a new record in the 16+ relay at this carnival!

Netball Grand Finals

A huge crowd was in attendance to see three Loreto netball teams playing grand finals at Campbelltown last Friday. As luck would have it, our three teams were all playing at 8:30pm on Courts 3, 4 and 5. There was blue and gold everywhere as friends and family members crammed into the spaces between the courts.

Our Loreto Year 7 Gold team put in an amazing display against the Comets, who had been in 1st place all season, barely losing a game. We grabbed the lead early, combining well all over the court while our defenders were creating intercept after intercept. Sofia, Lily and Yashi were looking dangerous in the goal circle; Grace was off briefly after a nasty fall but bounced back quickly; Allegra, Freddie and Scarlett were feeding our shooters, while defenders Rihanna and Alaina were clever with their positioning against taller opponents.

We led at three-quarter time by one goal. Could we cause a massive upset?

The Comets responded with the first two goals of the last quarter to lead by one. Yashi fired back and tied the scores at 9-9. It was an incredibly tense final stanza! Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite hold on, with the Comets pulling away in the last few minutes. Nonetheless, coach Ava and the team should be very proud. It was a brilliant effort to win our first two finals and push the top team every inch of the way in the decider.

The Loreto Year 7 Blue team were playing against the Rockets, who had beaten us by one goal in the semifinal. This time we controlled things from the start. Eliza, Savy and Delilah were impassable in defence; Bella and Everly were clinical in the goal circle; Isabelle, Paloma, Mae and Zali ran all game in the centre court. We ran out winners 38-21.

Coach Megan has overseen this group’s development since Year 2! There have been several premierships along the way. The school is very lucky to have her! Good luck to Megan and the players who now “graduate” into our middle school netball program.

On Court 5, Ms White was coaching our Year 6 Maroon team in the decider against the Spartans. Ella C was deadly in the first quarter, popping in goals from everywhere as we raced to a 4-goal lead.

We maintained this lead most of the game, however the Spartans kept nipping at our heels. Ms White rotated a big squad on and off the court, with the help of her assistant coaches Eva and Ella. Lucy K and Ellie worked tirelessly in defence, picking up a number of intercepts. They rotated with Isobel and Alessandra who continued to make it hard for the opposition to score.

We held a nervy 3-goal lead at three-quarter time. Would it be enough?

Time felt like it slowed down in the final quarter as we sat on our narrow lead. Anxious family members took turns peering over the shoulders of the scorers and timekeeper. A watched clock never ticks…

We needn’t have worried. The girls and coaches had things under control! Lucy Z and Tiana found their shooting range. Kenya was reading the play well in the midcourt and Arabella was constructive with her passing. Tanvi was finding space and Amelia and Millie were using their speed to great effect. We ran out winners by 3 goals.

State Swimming Championships

Congratulations to Evie H, Ruby V B and Colette C who represented the East Adelaide SAPSASA district at the State Swimming Championships recently. Evie came 4th in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay; Ruby came 9th in the 50m Backstroke; Colette came 3rd in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay and 4th in the 50m Butterfly. East Adelaide finished in third place overall. An outstanding achievement in what is a high-standard competition.

Catholic Primary Schools Swimming Carnival

Well done to Loreto’s swimming team who came in 3rd place in Section 1 at the recent Catholic Primary Schools Carnival.

We were blessed with a perfect day at Burnside Pool and put in strong performances across all strokes and in all age groups. There were a number of individual achievements, but the highlight was the relays. Team spirit was truly on show and we won ribbons in every single relay event.

Well done to our Year 3s who were attending their very first carnival and acquitted themselves well. It was great to see the improvement from our Year 4 swimmers, who didn’t manage to win a ribbon 12 months ago as Year 3 students, but this year came home with 4. Special mention to our Year 6 swimmers who won a hotly-contested 4 x 50m Medley Relay in the very first event on the schedule, setting the tone for the rest of the day. Also, congratulations to our Year 5s who won the 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay in the closing stages which helped clinch 3rd place for Loreto on the final table.

The girls should be pleased with their efforts on what was a really fun day. They performed strongly, supported their teammates throughout, celebrated each other’s successes and represented the school with pride. Many thanks to Ms Powell for helping organise the swimmers and to all the family members for their support during the day.
